Framing Terminology
- Rebate Size
- The outside measurement of artwork, windowmount or undermount i.e. the size which the moulding must be ust to accommodate. This measurement is sometimes referred to as the 'Glass size'.
- Reframe
- Strictly speaking this is where the frame rim only is replaced, and the original contents are placed into the new rim. In practice this refers to any job where a customer has brought in a piece of art in a frame which is being put into a new frame.
- Reglaze
- Replacing old, broken or defective glass in a frame.
- Rep
- A shady individual - loosely formed in the shape of a human being - who will visit you when you are too busy, or (if you live in a resort area) in the peak summer season, and offer advice on the latest trend and best selling moulding. Invariably this will be one which the Rep's employer has too much of in the warehouse.
Reps can provide you with dubious "intelligence" which is usually misinformation fed to them by other framers. Unfortunately it is illegal to kill people, so as a protected species Reps are fairly common. There are some exceptions- some reps will invent their own misinformation rather than relying on that from your competitors, this higher thinking is a mark of the "greater-Rep" subspecies.
Reps can be a useful source of outdated, broken and secondhand machinery that has already done the rounds on ebay, or brand new machinery at a premium price.
They can sometimes be attached to your wall with a nail gun, but offer little ornamental or trophy value, it is now common practice in the UK to fill them with tea or coffee and return them to their natural environment (the Vauxhall Vectra).
Delving into folklore, it has been rumoured that the conmmon-or-garden Rep's mission is to prevent you working for the duration of its stay. Many achieve this by constantly checking their mobile (cell phone) for messages or answering calls whilst you wait politely. Try it, just watch what they do while you put the kettle on ;)
A futher sub-species is the self employed rep, this is a bit of a live one, although frequently the bearer of better quality jokes and anecdotes, as a survivor and predator living on its wits the negotiations can damanding but worthwhile. Bacardi helps.
The salaried rep- or company rep. These are not all on commission, however they may have targets to meet. Usually young blood who have upsurped the elderly or weak leader of the pack from its Vectra and marked its territory by hanging its jacket on the hook provided. May recycle you a cheap bottle of scotch, and a printed card at christmas time.
The uber-rep (or "Big Cheese") Often disguised as a van driver, these may well be the CEO of the regional supplier you deal with. Expect fruiter language, the real "intelligence" and a hand written card plus bottle of decent Scotch at Christmas time. Would never dream of giving you a cheap bottle of scotch, in case you recycle it by giving it to his rep, or worse still, his van driver next christmas.
- Rim
- The frame component when all four pieces are assembled. A term commonly used in contract/trade framing, where a customer may order x number of rims, and Y number of glass to fit and final assembly is left to the customer.
- Rust
- (Paper Rust) Staining on paper, more often seen in old prints, caused by metallic impurities introduced during the (letterpress) printing, or more rarely, during the manufacture of hand made papers. Small metallic particles become embedded into the paper and cause staining as they oxidise. Oxidisation can take many years, This is often black in appearance. The slower the oxidisation, the darker the stain. Often tiny particles of metal remain embedded.
