Underpinners (V-nailers)
Underpinners (also known as V-nailers) are used to join two mitred sections of moulding together. Glue should be applied to the mitre prior to joining on the underpinner. PVA-based wood glue is suitable for joining wood mouldings, but specialist adhesives should be used for acrylic mouldings. There are two main classes of underpinner: manual and pneumatic.

Mitring Equipment
Mitring machines are used to mitre mouldings, ready for creating a frame rim. Although typically used to cut 45-degree mitres, they can also cut at other angles, for example to create an octagonal frame rim.
Mitre Guillotines
A popular make of Mitre Guillotine is the Morso F, which is available in either metric or imperial versions.

Mountcutters (Matcutters)
Mountcutters (also known as matcutters) are used to cut mountboard (matboard) for the framing of artwork and objects. Manual mountcutters are available that will either make linear or oval cuts in a board. Computerised mountcutters (CMC's) are also available. CMC's allow framers to design a mount on a computer screen, which is subsequently cut on a specialist bed. CMC's can cut straight or curved lines and v-grooves, giving the framer a wide variety of design options.

Sheet Cutters
Sheet cutters are used for quick and easy cutting of mountboard, backing board, foamboard and glass. Additional care needs to be taken when cutting speciality framing glass such as Tru Vue museum glass.
