Re: Basic hobby set up?

Hello Rainbow. I think I'm pretty much starting the way you did. Been looking at getting a Nobex saw for a few weeks but it seems tricky to get a hold of. Either out of stock or on back order. Just wondering how many frames a week on average do you make? What other equipment do you have for your lev...

Re: Starting out - stocking up

To answer your question, I don't use Wessex for mouldings as I'm mostly interested in hand finishing frames so I'm only buying bare wood mouldings just now. Lion's range of bare wood is better than Wessex and their website is a lot more straightforward to order cut to size moulding. As I buy more eq...

Re: Starting out - stocking up

Hello. Welcome to the forum from another beginner. So far I've bought everything from Lion and Wessex. Lion for mouldings and general supplies like D-rings, tape etc and Wessex for glass, mountboard and backing board. I haven't bought any moulding stock so far, I just get everyting cut to size from ...

Wow! That's amazing! I've been looking for something like this for a while now. I'd definitely be interested in purchasing frames from you, finished or unfinished.

Re: New frame finished. Advice needed

Hello Mark. Your opaque comment makes perfect sense, I hadn't thought of it like that. This frame has had 2 coats of black bole over the acrylic paint and then a dark brown wax polish so it's not quite just acrylic. It is however still not the finish I'm looking for. I am thoroughly enjoying the lea...

Re: New frame finished. Advice needed

Hello Prospero. The reason why I framed it with a mount is that as I'm getting all my mouldings on chop and Lion have a minimum chop size of 150mm. The height if the painting is less than that so to be able to make a frame to fit the painting, I had to mount it to take it over 150mm. However, I've b...

Re: New frame finished. Advice needed

Dermot, thank you so much for your advice, I'll start googling for supplies. I have very little idea what I'm doing really, I'm just going on instinct, discovering various techniques and then experimenting with them. I tried shellac before, it was the first hand finished frame I made and the results...

New frame finished. Advice needed

Hello everyone. I've just finished this frame for a painting I did last year and I'm hoping for some feedback. figs.jpg It's a bit more traditional than my last one with the beetle but I'm quite happy with the overall look. It's hand finished with 3 coats of red gesso, 1 coat of black acrylic paint,...

Re: New kid on the block

Hello Mark So far I have had all my mouldings cut to size by the supplier, and glass too. I have a hobby level mountcutter and underpinner plus a table, paint, wax brushes etc. It's not much but the results have been encouraging so far. I'm hoping to expand in equipment and space as and when necessi...

Hello Mark. Best of luck with your venture. I'm in a similar position as you, but without any equipment and a smaller space!

I started framing in Sept last year and have received some great advice here.

Re: New frame, had a bit of an experiment.

Thanks for the feedback VF and FF. I see what you mean about the black inner rail and really appreciate your critique. This was an experiment and being my first attempt at something like this, I'm hoping my eye for such things will improve. I've only been framing since Sept last year so experimentin...

New frame, had a bit of an experiment.

Hello everyone. Just finished this frame today. I just need to clean the glass and secure everything but I wanted to show it as I spent an age on it today and wanted to show it to someone (None of my family or friends are remotely interested in framing  ) I had a vision in my head of how I want...

Rose and Hollis Info Needed

Hello all. Just looking at the Rose and Hollis website and there's not a lot of info there. Can anyone tell me if they do a moulding chop service and if they do, what is there minimum order amount?

Regards

Trying a new finish

Hello all. I bought some Kolner bole a while ago and gave it a go. 3 coats of red acrylic gesso, light sanding, 2 coats of black acrylic paint, polish with steel wool, mask off inner edge with masking tape and paint with Liquid Leaf. Happy with how they look, very different to the the wax polish loo...

New painting in a new frame

Just finished this still life and had its frame already to go in...happy days! plums finished.jpg Really enjoying being able to make a painting for a frame rather than the other way around Being able to see how it's going to look in its frame right from the early stages makes is so useful. Re: My framing journey. Progress!

Hello Mark. Firstly thank you for your kind words! I do work from home at the moment, in a conservatory, but I also have a garden office that needs some work that potentially could be used as a workshop. I'm looking to get out of the job I'm doing just now and painting is something I'd like to do a ...

My framing journey. Progress!

Hello all I've bought myself some framing equipment recently and can now join frames, cut mounts and pretty much put everything together. I'm getting my moulding on chop from one company and buying the glass from another and keeping my fingers crossed my measuring is right. I painted this little Bor...
