Re: Hobby vs. business
I sat down with a photographer this morning, she does portraits only and is based about 20 miles away so not direct competition as such. Between us we designed a range of 3 moldings and with 6 different colours, all specially mixed shades of chalk paint in light pastel colours finished with a double...

Re: Hobby vs. business
I'm getting quite into my hand finished work, the hardest part was working out what paints and techniques work best. I've used emulsions, masonry paint, annie sloan chalk paint (my clients love this on baby photo's) a whole mess of waxes and spray finishes. By far my favorite is the spray finish as ...

Re: High St Framers Disappearing!
Sorry but you have and you obviously don't have a clue what a framer does and the wider skills we have to have in order to run a successful business which includes many other sectors not just photographers. All I can do is apologize for any offense caused and assure you that it was in no way intent...

Re: High St Framers Disappearing!
Just hope your local framer doesn't start taking photos and open a photo studio because he has spare time and space :Slap: It's an open market and it does happen! I find that the above a little belittling. Obviously being new to the industry you still think that picture framing is just fixing four ...

Re: High St Framers Disappearing!
That's probably true Ryan, but will the local framers still be there when you need them? Which is surely the question posed by this thread. Rolf A good point, but it's not like there isn't going to be framers. Framing as a trade will remain. It's the same as Photography, every other person with a c...

Re: High St Framers Disappearing!
sorry i wasnt saying there are no savings i am saying once you cost your labour into it, the savings are not as big as you think. and if you are using not pro kit the savings are less, as it takes longer say it takes you an hr to make a frame, labour at approx 50 bucks, suddenly eats into those sav...

Re: How would you float mount an artboard
Hope you got permission from Alistair to copy his post  But seriously - there's a forum here called 'The good, the bad and the ugly' where we post work we have done etc - most will include artwork - has to really to show how the frame shows it off. Other forums like 'help' (how do I frame ...

Re: High St Framers Disappearing!
well the savings are not as simple as it may seem though First your time still costs money, like if you go take pictures for a client you charge for your time its also like said above, cost of storage, wasteage etc etc and also building a fund for machine maintenace and replacement I'm not trying t...

Re: High St Framers Disappearing!
It's an odd one, for a bunch of people that preach that the product is much more than the sum of it's parts (paper) they (we :D ) are often the first to scream HOW MUCH when it comes to frames. I can't lie and say that making the frames myself isn't just about having control over the finished produc...

Re: How would you float mount an artboard
Not without opening up a copyright issue. Unless permission has been given you can't copy the image (or any part of it) and even if permission has been given I doubt that it covers a snapshot to be posted on a forum.Graysalchemy wrote:can we not see the artwork?

Moulding - Buying finished or bare wood.
I have quite a number of samples now from some different suppliers but after talking to one framer I wonder if it's worth expanding into buying bare wood moldings and hand finishing them myself. I hadn't given this any thought at all but I'm open the the challenge! So what do you do yourselves? Is i...

My head hurts. Is there any reason that a person who isn't a member but has taken and passed the exam can't call/advertise themselves as a Guild Qualified Framer? If I make up a frame to sell as a ready made, can I pop a Museum graded mount (provided the suppliers are a part of the scheme) into it a...

Hiya, I'm in the same boat (near enough) as yourself. My wife and I are professional photographers and although the framing was a bit of fun I've got very into it. It's nice to get off the computer and work with your hands! I have a logan mount cutter and I use a hand saw that I bought from b&q ...

Hi guys, I know that amongst photographers there is much debate about Guilds and associations and if it's worth it or not. The qualifications awarded by these bodies are regarded by many as simply not worth the bother. Does the same go for picture framing? Is it worth joining and becoming qualified?...

I use a mitre trimmer myself, I had a little trouble with it but once my Brother the engineer had a look and used some odd looking tools he had the blades as close to 45 degrees as it will ever be and my corners are spot on. It does take longer, about 15 minutes to make a frame, cut the glass and ba...

Hello there, another one from Northern Ireland.
Hello everyone! My wife and I are professional photographers in Portadown, Northern Ireland. I do a wee bit of framing for my own pleasure, just stuff around the house etc, we have a great framer in town that is very good at what he does and doesn't charge me nearly enough considering how he manages...
