BTW, I'd just like to offer an apology to Johnny9 for completely and utterly hijacking his topic. Had I known what was going to happen, I'd have started one of me own!

I already have BBEst, from when I was considering doing it as a sideline about a year ago. Mark & Robo put me off the idea at that time for much the same reasons as were offered in this thread - and they were right, at that time. BBEst has been handy for the business plan I've been working on fo...

John, He still has a lot to learn, but one thing he won't have to worry about is learning to use one of those fool matcutters where you have to rotate the mat around to cut each side!  It takes quite some time for someone to learn how to cut acceptable mats with one of the "drag a...

In answer to your questions: Not yet, but I'm building a nice pile of offcuts and mounts from the machine with which I can practice. One thing I have at the moment is time - lots of it! A village shop. Seems too remote to work? That's what I first thought, but here people will travel miles to get wh...

Those frames are superb! An inspiration to us all. I now know what to do with the odd mouldings that I got for fr...

The reasoning behind the purchase of the Gunnar was quality, value, and choice. I was considering a new manual cutter such as an ultimat, along with a high end oval cutter. The price for those two comes to about half to two thirds of a decent second-hand CMC, but the CMC gives you speed, accuracy an...

I apologise, I'm a bit oversensitive today as the wife is in for a minor op. It's nothing to worry about, but you do anyway! Currently I own a Morso (I bought it well over 18 months ago) and a Gunnar F1 (a bit of an upgrade from my Logan ruler!), a logan hand underpinner (soon to be replaced by a mi...

What I do with my own works when there are dents (usually caused by fingers pressing the canvas too hard) is dampen (not soak!) the back and gently dry with a hairdryer. It may need a few goes, and you will need to make sure all the pva is off - the hairdryer will soften any residue.

Which, if you look above, is what I've already said I'm doing!

I have to wonder about this site. Some newbies are welcomed with open arms, others get the spanish inquisition. I think I'll go back to lurking, until such time (if ever) I work out the politics of the place.

Ta very muchly.

Woodward: Massive coincidence here. We both were in IT, we are both looking at framing from the same direction..... and we're both from Coventry. What are the odds on that?

I don't know where you got that idea from, I am yet to come across anyone who started framing as a hobby. Who ever told you that doesn't know much about framing. Well, there's two taking that path on this thread alone, and like I said I used to know some framers who started that way. From my point ...

Perhaps someone could host a repository of coreldraw files, then Wizard, Valiani and Gunnar owners (and more?) could all share their designs.

Not sure where you are getting your facts from regards hobbyists turning professional Spit. I started off framing my own stuff, but with a view to framing others' - from a shop. The few professional framers that I know/knew in the past started out that way. It's much the same route as I'm taking, a...

Ah, but like my previous livelihood, computing, hobbyists is the main pool from which adult framers grow from.

Another place to look for training is the fine art trade guild site, but couldn't see one right in your area, which is a bit surprising, really!

http://www.fineart.co.uk/Guildtrainerslist.htm

I'll be booking one myself soon.

I believe there are thicker blades available which are less flexible, these are meant for thicker boards.

Have you tried doing the cut in 2 or three passes, going in about 1.5 mill at a time?

You only have to look at other reports of Tesco's underhand tactics elsewhere, completely ignored by the government, to realise this is what goes on in Bliars (Browns?) Britain. Small business is just a bug to be stepped on. We've gone from a nation of shopkeepers to a service industry (servicing Te...
