A mate of mine has some quite sizable bits of bog oak. He was thinking of getting me to produce mouldings from it. It seemed like a very interesting project but I now think I'll steer well clear as it's supposed to be a lot harder than oak. The bottles of Hobgoblin are calming me down nicely and Mog...

A Nightmare on Oak St.
I've just finished a job that I don't want to see again. A corporate client requested 15 frames containing limited edition watercolours. The moulding was a flat 2" barefaced oak with a wax. No problem methinks and sets to work. Problems started when I started to cut the moulding. It was so hard...

I saw a couple of shows from the last series of the Apprentice and couldn't believe just how bad the contestants were. I'm not placing myself as ' the consummate professional', but I wouldn't have hired any of them to sweep the workshop, never mind meet a customer. They seem to be lazy, self centred...

Just for Merlin: The Royal Navy found they had too many officers and decided to offer an early retirement bonus. They promised any officer who volunteered for retirement, a bonus of £1,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any two points on his body. The officer got to choose what t...

I totally forgot about St. Davids day and was photographing a wedding in Suffolk. I noticed a guest wearing a daffodil buttonhole and the penny dropped. Needless to say, a quick bit of horticulture with the trusty Leatherman in the hotel garden saw me suitably attired for the day. Now to the rugby.....

It would be great if everyone new to this industry went to a framing school and learned the basics! Great idea. However, the two week basic course I went on delivered loads of bad advice and techniques that I've only rectified due to being on this forum and taking advice from true professionals. Wi...

In the back room I tend to have Planet Rock. I'm mighty peeved that they are taking it off the DAB radio list soon. I don't think I can go through a day in the workshop without Planet Rock. I'm still hoping there'll be a buy out by Rick Wakeman and others. Failing that, the iPod will be installed a...

Great British Sci Fi. I haven't seen an episode for years. I seem to remember being told that the cast and crew, including the writers didn't know what was happening from one week to the next and quite often 'winged it'. The 'special effects' were unusual to say the least. Who can forget the giant w...
