ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
Hi All
Does anyone have an opinion on the New Onyx 90 wall mounted materials cutter? Touched it, used it or even bought it. It retails for £899.00 including the Vodka & Tonic. It's getting on for half the price of a Keencut or Fletcher, but will it do half the job?
Regards

The US price is $700 (before any tax). Can shipping costs be that much?

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
Thank you for your posts.
I would be happy to know if the product is any good and if so, I could go on a mission to shop for one at the right price. After all, a tired Fletcher or Keencut will cost between £300 to £500 and a nice one between £600 to £1000.

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
It's a UK only purchase rather than the USA based on it's weight, size and then duty on top.
This machine does not cut MDF. Is that the end of the world, as we will all eventually be using an alternative backing board?
Are any of you currently using an alternative on a full time basis?

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
An alternative to MDF?
Oh yes! For a looooong time too - in fact ever since corricor and its spin offs came out - mainly because up until then I never owned a maxi slasher - never had the height in my garage........ or the width!
Could cut that with my mountcutter and its squaring arm.
The twin wheel MDF (etc) cutter on my excalibur is hardly ever used - when I need to cut MDF, or stuff that those wheels will cut, rather than go to the bother of un-parking that housing and changing the counterbalance over to it - I'll just revert to what I always used to do - score and snap along a marked line.
Anyway - I use foam core as a backing these days.
A machine that is MDF unfriendly can't be all bad!

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
Hello and welcome home.
Just thought I would bring this out of moth balls to see if a little further down the line, any of you have an opinion on the Onyx 90 material cutter? It is on offer with DIY Framing at the 2009 Focus exhibition at the NEC. £782.00 including the VODKA AND TONIC plus £50.00 carriage. There are a couple of useful videos on the www.framingsupplies.com website which have wetted my appetite. Has anyone seen a review on the thing? I just want someone with experience and a bit of cred, to give an honest opinion. Price and warranty (5 years) are good on the thing.

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
I watched the video. I'd say it's a good machine and a good price - but as for 'the best in the world' I'm not so sure. I have a Keencut excalibur.
The Onyx has one production stop that can be used either side - excalibur has one each side - OK you could buy another stop - I did for the keencut - I have two on the right and one on the left.
The onyx has interchangeable cutting tools that have to live somewhere when not in use - I'd need 3 of each 'coz I'd be bound to misplace them sometime. The keencut has all those tools in a rotating head, you just turn a knob. Well, actually it has three tools on the cutting head, blade, scoring blade and glass cutter. The MDF/etc twin wheel cutter, which the onyx does not have, is parked above.
The Onyx cutting head is not counterbalanced The keencut head is - you can park it anywhere and the counterbalance is easily changed from the 3 tool head to the twin wheel head.
The onyx glass cutter - you have to place the wheel on the glass, on the keencut you don't, you start above it and just pull down.
Summary - I'd get my stuff cut quicker than you!
Oh - and you won't find a better after sales service than you will from Keencut - even though you bought your machine through a distributor.

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
If you are looking at saving money, it wouldn't cost all that much to replace the worn bits on that tired Fletcher or Keencut and get it back to working like new! Both Fletcher & Keencut are great for spares and back up.DEEPJOY wrote:a tired Fletcher or Keencut will cost between £300 to £500
Almost all of my equipment was bought as secondhand. I have a Keencut Ultimat, a System 4000 and an Oval 6. All are old and all restored back to working like new with a little help from Keencut. Worth thinking about!

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
Thank you both for you comments.
I think unless i get a couple of late 5 star reviews on the Onyx, it will be a search for a second hand Fletcher or Keencut. The height of my garage is going to restrict me. With the Onyx it would mean a a bendy back whilst cutting, I have MAX 88 inches floor to ceiling, I do not think I would be able to get the Keencut 5000 in.

Re: ONYX 90 MATERIALS CUTTER
I know the feeling. I am just moving from the gallery into a workshop made from an old mobile home. Great floor area but only 6ft clearance after new flooring and roof supports. Keencut needs over 9ft so now I am faced with chopping out part of the roof. Had contemplated selling it on but would need a "compact" replacement that works as well as the Keencut. Not found one yet but open to suggestions.DEEPJOY wrote:I have MAX 88 inches floor to ceiling, I do not think I would be able to get the Keencut 5000 in

Crofter
I think the Fletcher 3100 and the Onyx would work for me, it would mean a bit of a bend to use them.
On the website www.framingsupplies.com on the pdf detail on the Onyx, they show a table of working heights based on the top fixing location of the cutter. You will struggle though with 6ft.
