Picture hanging cord knots

Post by joe90 »

Does anybody know if there is a special knot that is best to tie for attaching picture cord to the eyelets/rings.
I always use a 'granny' knot but am afraid that one day it will unravels causing the pictrure to fall. :?:

Joe,

DIY Framing have an article on their website (you will need to register) that explains one method of stringing a frame. Link to the list of available help sheets is:

Double the cord and tie the ends in a reef knot.

I don't like cord one bit. It looks cheap and most of it stretches too which is a big enough reason not to use it. How the heck is anyone going to hang their picture exactly at the height they want it, if the cord stretches an indeterminate amount, without ending up with 27 extra holes in the wall.

Supersoft strand wire is excellent, so are Beehive hangers, Magic Marker Hangers, Wall buddies, but it's no steeeenking cord for me, thank you!

I also use supersoft wire rather than cord, just my preference. You can use any knot with cord as long as it holds!

The best knots are easy to undo, but won't undo themselves, ask any rock climber. The reef knot tightens on itself the more you pull on it but as soon as you want to undo it (assuming it's not cotton or something) all you have to do is push it together.

I also hate cord, but the first knot I use on super softstrand is a barrel hitch, after that it's just cosmetic.

there is only one knot you should use - the clove hitch - the more you pull the tighter it gets

How do you know if 'DIY Framing' is a reliable authority on framing techniques? Just wondering?
