Car insurance - a banner on this forum
A few days ago I used Moneysupermarket.com to get quotes for car insurance.
Now I see the exact same results for my car coming up as a banner at the bottom of the home page here
Will everyone see this banner - or only me ?
How does the car insurance company know I'm looking at the FF
Is that what cookies are all about?

Thanks John - most interesting explanation from those here who clearly are computer savvy.
I had seen the title " Wonga" but as not interested in reading about loans, never opened the post.

I have noticed that when members post a link to an item on Lion's website it also shows other items recently viewed with them, presumably by the person who posted the link.

Just read this ........ when a banner ad appeared for a product I was looking at 10 minutes ago...

Re: Car insurance - a banner on this forum
Not THAT relevant, just yesterday I had a banner ad posted for a Rangmaster cooker. I certainly haven't looked at any such sites for at least a year, since we had our 'new' cooker installed just in time for Christmas LAST year!
Right now it's serving me up a mouthwatering Samsung ad for a Galaxy S4, which might be nice for Xmas this year if I wasn't already using one.......
....some day the ad suppliers will realise that MOST people do a search, then buy something - so advertising to them fifty weeks (or ten minutes) later isn't a valuable use of their resources. I don't think I've EVER seen an ad (here on FF) for something that I hadn't already bought.
ETA it's changed as I write this, to an ad for Carphone warehouse - again offering me a Galaxy S4!

Yeah I get companies I look for, following me around with offers, quotes etc all the time.
Re: Car insurance - a banner on this forum
I got Mirrors for Sale now.
Which is spooky because I had some mirrors (2 sheets 4x3' 3mm and 4 bevel 20x16) from Wessex today. Funny thing is that I ordered over the phone and I haven't been goooogling mirrors in any form. And I haven't bought a mirror for yonks.
Aliens!
OMG! It's changed to Volkswagens now. And just this morning I bought a VW* campervan.
*No I didn't I'm lying.
But not about the mirrors.

Re: Car insurance - a banner on this forum
I don't get any adverts at all. They are blocked and that's that! I never used to look at adverts, before I loaded the blocking software onto the computer, so blocking the adverts made good sense to me.
Adverts and other unwanted stuff which gets downloaded when visit a website are stealing the speed of your computer and also your available bandwidth when you are downloading anything from the internet.
Kev recommemded Adblock plus to me and I instantly got a faster computer from the moment it was installed onto the computer.
Great tip

Re: Car insurance - a banner on this forum
Who needs the advertising revenue that the forum generates anyway. Why should we be submitted to the torture of having to force our eyes to skip past these abominations while some fat cat reaps all the rewards. The revenue from Google AdSense alone must surely cover most of his outlay on coffee and biscuits.
Of course I would be happy to pay a subscription as an alternative, therefore I'm perfectly justified in posting on the forum just how much I hate advertising. Why should I not let everyone know, right here on the forum, how to block this evil that is being forced on us?
Yes, let's block the ads on our browsers, the sod can buy his own bloody biscuits!
