Keeping shop door closed in a strong breeze?

Post by ChrisG »

We have an unusually large door that tends to blow open in a north easterly. No problem this time of year but a pain in January. Anyone recommend any type of door closer or similar?

A knotty problem. If you make it too strong then some folks won't me able to get in. :?

A door with a handle and a catch would be the ideal. If that's practical.

Maybe the breeze will blow some trade in.

We are on a corner facing the beach, perfect on a sunny day like today with the sun out, the door open and a view of the sea, right in the impact zone for south westerly gales! We have no alternative but have a door handle and catch. We have to remember to keep everything regularly oiled as we did have a problem when it dropped a bit and the handle was stiff and the more faint hearted thought we were closed! The other option of a strong spring loaded thingy (can't think of its proper name) I don't think is such a good option as in the proper gales it will blow ajar anyway, and to be stiff enough to make a real difference might make it difficult for people with push chairs to get in before it snaps shut!

This problem gave me one of the scariest events in my life, a few years back we had some really bad weather, the wind blew my door open with such force it shattered the glass in it, big wow I hear you cry, there's more, my main side window exploded outwards, a window in the back of the shop cracked, the side window went with such force it peppered a car on the opposite side of the road and smashed it's passenger side window, the wind was literally howling through the open door and out of the smashed window, the entire shop seemed to be shaking, and it brought some of the ceiling down.

I got underneath my desk, very scary indeed.
