Thats where a spacer would help in this situation,

I would go with what justintime has suggested, how much space are you allowing for the tray frame gap?
You could always fit a spacer around the outside sides of the canvas this will cover the nails and canvas sides to tidy things up.

don't you just love it when you can get a frame out of an off-cut that works

You could use L brackets and fix them from behind?

You can add a flat slip which come in various sizes, which works really well.

Number 13 looks like shims/packers for fitting windows and alike

I think its a twisted piece of moulding have you got any left over to try again or replace the 2 pieces with the problem?

I would still want to add glass but if you don't want to do that i would stick the mount downt o a mdf backing board

This is how you refill the original shutes,

If the bottom blades are that tight i would recommend removing the top blades before you try giving the bottom blades any force to remove as if you slip with force next to the top blades you could be in a lot of trouble,
