It's usually best to cover the liner before cutting to size on a morso or guilotine rather than a saw, that should give you a better finish on the corners.

I've used the crescent brite cores many times and never thought the coloured core influenced the surface paper colour. I agree it's not for top level work but for childrens pictures and decorative art it's a very good range. I just wish it was more easily available!
