Re: Deposit dilemma....

I would invoice the full amount on each frame completed, keeping the deposit in hand until the last of the work comes in, and credit it against that.

Re: Waiting for Hoffmann

I love my Hoffmann, and use it for more than half of the frames I make. Once you have got the hang of it, the results are fantastic. BUT It is significantly slower to make a frame than an underpinner, it creates noise and sawdust, takes time to change the router bit for different sizes, and it is ex...

I also have 2 benches. One is plywood covered with grey framers board - I then put 2 or 3 coats of Polyvine matt varnish over it, hoping it would last a few months. It's been on there for at least a couple of years now, and it is still good. The other one is covered in CUT PILE carpet tiles (not the...

Re: Oak supplier advice

I've had oak delivered from Rose & Hollis and Centrado recently, and it has all been fine. Fine, that is for natural wood. Every tree is different, and the grain pattern and the tone varies from length to length sometimes by a lot, normally it is marginal. I show the customer a range of samples,...

A quick coat of black paint to the inside of the moulding before assembly will improve the appearance too.

Re: Framing insects

Hi Anu I frame a lot of butterflies, and I would first of all suggest that you discuss this with your client. I am assuming that these are mounted on pins. Some of the samples may be secure on the pin, or they may be spinning on the pin. If spinning this will need gluing to secure it, but I certainl...

Re: Can I tell what quality mountboard has been used?

I understand that you want to do the best by your customer. However, I would remind you not to take on everyone's problems as your own. Having worked for many artists over the years, I would not assume that quality materials or techniques have been used, regardless of the retail price of the artwork...

Re: What extra ‘must have’ equipment would you recommend?

I would approach this question a different way. Depending on the type of work you do. Look carefully at what the steps you regularly go through, and which bits could be speeded up with another piece of kit. I have a ruler, Stanley knife, pencil, tape measure etc for each bench to avoid walking backw...

Re: framing silk scarves

This is a silk Hermes scarf I did last year. I used conservation mountboard glued to foamcore and then sewed the scarf to the board with a very fine thread.

Easy, but long winded job. Tag gun can leave rather large holes in the silk

Re: Selling my business

Most small framing businesses don’t have any real value as a ‘business’ because the owner is the business. So what you are usually selling is the stock and the equipment. If you have a regular flow of business that is profitable and would definitely transfer to a new owner (contracted for example) t...

Re: translucent mounting and framing of drafting film, and a frame with no sides...

How about using a normal mount, solving the hingeing and touching the glass issues, and then incorporating some led lighting behind the artwork.

This would look dramatic and be much more cost effective. You might also find a framer willing to take on the job!

I’m sure my accountant told me that excel is no longer accepted and that you need to use quickbooks or xero type programs. I’m with John, long ago decided it was worth the money to pay an accountant to deal with HMRC so I don’t have to. I send him the excel and he uses approved software to submit. C...

Re: Oak supplier advice

These days I don't buy much finished moulding, but when I do, I have a higher expectation that it will be virtually all useable. (Which isn't always the case) With unfinished moulding I fully expect to have to cut around a few imperfections, and to finish to the specification I want. Also from Centr...

Re: Oak supplier advice

I buy from Rose & Hollis and Centrado for oak. I have found both to be good quality, although the colour and grain pattern does change from length to length. As a matter of course I sand, shellac and wax oak, and often stain it too, in order to get a good finish. But this is part of the job if y...

Re: Pistorius Underpinner - Problem

Sounds like you may be using the wrong shape of wedges (V nails). From your description, the extra pressure required might be because the wedge is being forced into a slightly different shape as it goes through the block, and once free, it is springing back into shape and pinging out violently. It i...

I do them for one regular customer, but only a couple of frames a month, and very occasionally for retail customers. I use a Hoffman to join the moulding, so my splines are for decorative purposes only.

Re: Contemporary hand finishing.

I've got a Kreg spline jig that I use on my router table. The Kreg jig works well, but I would probably just make a simple wooden jig if I was starting again - there's plenty of Youtube videos on how to do that. I also have a very small planer/thicknesser (Proxxon DH40) which makes getting the thick...
