Re: How much do any of us use our routers and what for?
I use a hand router a lot but not fro frames, for trimming artists panels. And the odd other job. The bench router get used for one job for a particular customer. The CNC router is another matter, it’s going all day but again not making frames, it’s mainly cutting oak and aluminium for easels.

Re: Cutting and joining hexagonal and octagonal frames.
If you made them a bit wider you could probably get a bessy clamp around them. Pinning is going to be fun but you may be able to use a biscuit joiner. You should be able to use standard moulding.

Somebody will list them on eBay for you I should think, and split the difference. You just have to provide photos and a description, and post them.

Speak to a professional supplier, they don’t generally sell via Etsy or EBay.

Larson Juhl

Re: Is it worth setting up or buying from a supplier
Wessex do a rim only service and most supplies do a chop service where they cut the moulding to length. Larson Juhl do a routing service when they cut and rout the corners, all you have to do is use the provided wedges to join them. They may be your best bet for that style of moulding.

Re: Any thoughts about making frames with lap jointed corners.
Ben Nicholson framed some of his work with lap jointed frames. I’ve considered making replicas as there are a number artists working in his style where a replica frame may be of interest.

Re: MDF Frame
I have a CNC and wouldn’t touch mdf frames for engraving. The quality of the MDF inside is dire. Better off using hardwood or pine. If you use an adhesive coating before carving then the results would be ok. Lasers are an option also. I have t explored the possibilities with picture frames but I use...

Re: Oval Spandrel Frames
I might put some plain wood ones up on my website, sometimes artists want them. I only need to make one and photograph it and offer several sizes. I’ll offer discount to framers…probably…

Re: Oval Spandrel Frames
I make them on my CNC out of 6mm birch plywood and get a nice chamfered edge. MDF would be ok but needs a bit more work on the chamfered edges when finishing.
