Morso F for sale. Very good condition. Near Salisbury. £300 for quick sale.

I had this Morso F for sale by auction on Ebay. The winning bidder has failed to pay for it or contact me. I am in a hurry to sell it because I am moving house. The hurry to sell is reflected in the price I am offering it for of £300. It is in perfect working order, it has been well maintained and ...

How is this moulding effect achieved?

I want to emulate the frame in the attached photo. It is hand finished but the feature I want to create is the grooves/fissures in the wood. I am fairly sure they are not natural. Is the moulding bought with the grooves pre decorated or is it done by the framer by hand? If so what wood is used and ...

Re: Mount Borders in the Golden Ratio

Well Prospero, my answer to that is, among the artists who are believed to have used the Golden Ratio proportions as a technique to help construct their work are: Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Sandro Botticelli, Albrecht Dürer and Salvador Dali. Should they have been in another job?

Re: Mount Borders in the Golden Ratio

Thanks for the interesting comments. Abacus, I will send you the formula that was created for me on an Excel spreadsheet. If anyone else that wants a copy just send me a message. I fully take on board the point that good design and proportions are achieved through personal perception and not through ...

Mount Borders in the Golden Ratio

As picture framers, we all know there are many considerations when deciding how wide mount borders should be. Really it is a personal choice and there is no "right" answer. For many years I have been fascinated by the Golden Ratio. I wondered how the Golden Ratio could be used to calculate mount ...

Re: 2nd Quality Moulding : How Much Should I Expect?

Thanks for the knowledgeable explanation of the cause, and ideas for using "figured" oak. I have never discarded any oak due to this patterning, just that I find it a bit unsightly on a narrow frame sometimes. Perhaps I will use it more often, and if the customers are happy then that is all that ...

Re: 2nd Quality Moulding : How Much Should I Expect?

Thanks Mark, A few good tips there. I am also in a rustic rural area. I have a band saw so I will try:
"dragging the faces of such mouldings in a reverse direction across the blade on my band saw."
What could possibly go wrong? :giggle:

Re: 2nd Quality Moulding : How Much Should I Expect?

One issue I find with oak in particular is the patters caused by the medullary rays. I know in oak furniture and panelling these patterns are often regarded as the best cuts, but on a thin oak moulding I can find them a visual distraction, that appear as blemishes. Unfortunately, because they are ...

How is this painted finish achieved?

I have seen a painted frame finish I really like and would like to know how it is done. I apologise for the poor quality of the photo. The wood looks like obeche. The finish looks like a solid colour (in this case blue) but with the wood pours filled in white. My first thought was the white was an ...

An excellent video Mal. Well produced. I have learned a lot from it. For anybody interested in a more in depth (though not all art related) study of The Golden Ratio, I recommend Mario Livio's book I look forward to your future video's Mal. Thanks, Colin.

Re: hanging systems in thin moulding

The problem we all encounter is that even the small D-rings are too wide for narrow frames. I solve this by snipping a portion of the D-ring screw plate, off. I've uploaded a "before" and "after" photo. I use a pair of Draper Aviation sheers:

Re: Nightmare on Tulipwood Street

Thanks to all, for your interesting and helpful comments. I shall repair rather replace, as I had originally planned. I had wondered about the atmospheric conditions where they were hung. They were in an exhibition, but I have never been to the venue. Of course right above a strong radiatiator could ...
