Re: Method to produce moulding profiles
Hello ! I wanted to post a short follow up, just to share the results. In the end (as some predicted) I kind of gave up on the idea and chose to try a few compound mouldings instead, made from hardware store strips of wood. This should quench my thirst for moulding variation for now (see attatchment...

Re: Method to produce moulding profiles
Feew yes its quite a difficult problem @prospero: I looked for the 'in situ' architectual plaster moulding, they do that in a similar way. Quite fascinating, but laborious, the scraper is run several times, as plaster is added, until the moulding is built up completely: https://www.youtube.com/watch...

Method to produce moulding profiles
Hello! Last week I came up with a method to bring some variation in my mouldings. The idea is to use a flat base, and add a profile to that with putty and a plastic profiled scraper, like shown in the image. The nice thing about this is one can easily produce a slightly different profile by cutting ...

Re: Gesso alternative for decorative elements
Thnx those are some useful starting points. I also thought of the 2 component wood filler, but hmm a bit pricey... The 'composition' was what I was looking for I think. Will investigate this further !

Gesso alternative for decorative elements
Hello
I'm looking for a suitable material to form decorative elements of on my frames. What I image is a material that can be processed similarly to silicone putty, ideally dispensed from a tube. It should set hard enough (unlike acrylic or silicone putty), but not too fast. Any ideas?...

Re: Rubbed finish scratches easily
thnx this is helping me a lot! Yes I must try wax again in combination with rottenstone.. I think you are right, 'vintage frames', about the reason for the scratch prone surface I'm getting. Where the nitro lacquer is very tough in itself, the fine grooves made by the steelwool probably break or som...

Re: Rubbed finish scratches easily
Oh sorry about that, nc=nitro cellulose ok thnx prospero, thats encouraging !..Thnx for the info.. So .. after you do the rubbing, your surface isn't prone to scrathes? No I also dont strive for perfectly smooth. I kind of like the brushed look I get with the steel wool (all steel wool 'scratches' i...

Rubbed finish scratches easily
Hello I'm an artist and have been making my own frames for about 10 years now, see https://www.facebook.com/josvanr/posts/10153959727162716 I've tried various kinds of finishes. For the past couple of years, I've mainly been using black nc lacquer, which I then rub with 000 steelwool and sometimes a...

what type of black finish is this?..
hello I found an image of a black frame on the internet: http://www.josvanriswick.nl/images/blackframe.jpg that has a very nice soft sheen to it. Notice the sheen changing from the ornamented area to the flat area. In the ornamented area, the surface also seems to be greyish in color. Obviously the ...
