Re: Looking for - Powerful fine dust extractor

The only effective way to eliminate the dust is to house the dust/chip extractor in a separate room or sealed enclosure. A 2hp extractor should be able to carry all the dust from the saw enclosure, but it's always the fine dust which escapes through the filter bag of the extractor that causes the pr...

Re: Moulding with Celtic Knot?

Good luck with trying to get a one-off purchase from any of those guys. If the carving is in a raised profile, then you could simply take a pressed cast of the motif and reproduce it with some DAS compound. They currently do a 'wood' compound. Then just stick it on to an appropriate oak moulding and...

Re: Narrowest moulding

The fundamental problem with this one is how to achieve a usable rebate inside such a thin frame. If the customer wants a really thin wooden frame then you could give them that by inverting either of the profiles - A195, A353, or A11 from the R&H range. The frame would then be front-loading but ...

Re: Recommend art deco moulding

One option would be to use this plainwood moulding from Piaf2 - https://www.piaf2mouldings.co.uk/ Fullscreen capture 10012025 35058 PM.bmp.jpg Paint the frame black and add a silver flat slip and that would look very art-deco. Just use black paint over a dark red primer on the joined up frame then r...

Re: Box Extender Glue

You need a PVA type wood working glue. Titebond is the best if you can get it but any other type will do the job. Use your strap clamp to join it up either before or after pinning. I always glue and clamp first because I can wriggle the joints to get the perfect edge and then pin next day when its d...

Re: Assembling a tray frame, high rebate

As Justintime says, it's well worth buying a good quality band clamp, but don't go overboard. The Screwfix ones will do just fine if they are the ones quickly to hand.
For the size of frame you're making, you would need to buy two and 'daisy chain' them around the frame.

Re: Making a Very Big Frame - Bigger!

Little bit of topic drift there.. I've opened up the frame and just as Frutini had predicted, it was rammed full of metalwork. The wood saw is a bit the worse for wear but the hacksaw get me through 'till the end. IMG_0013.JPG I got all the nails out by drilling alongside each with a 2mm drill bit a...

Re: I’m struggling right now.

Regarding the rebate supports. Take them off and clean out the channels thoroughly with white spirit and 0000 wire wool. When dry, dust off any wire residue. Now spray some PTFE, only onto the bases of the supports and let that dry. They should now move quite freely. As regards the blades - just rep...

Re: Gonna need a bigger Morso!

It's been years since I used a Morso, but if I remember right, after removing the pedal stop and when the blades are at their max height, you should be able to get a few more mm by 'toeing up' the pedal. Remove also the rebate supports - it's a wide moulding, you don't need them. Now over-measure th...

Re: Making a Very Big Frame - Bigger!

Thanks for your comments. If I had gone for cutting it down the middle, that still would not have given me access to the engaged slip. All the frame elements are well glued together so there was no way of removing it. To increase the sight size of the frame I have to reduce or remove that inner slip...

Making a Very Big Frame - Bigger!

A customer gave me this frame to re-size so that painting he has will fit inside. The canvas is 2" longer than the rebate but 4" shorter on the height. IMG_0012.JPG IMG_0011.JPG You can't just break these frames open at the mitres, they are built like doorways. The only way in is to saw an...

Confused and Needing some Advice

I have a problem which is worrying me somewhat. Perhaps I am wrong and suffer from very confused thinking but I hope by posting this here, others might recognize the faults in my argument and correct my confused conclusions. It is to do with energy prices and the current enthusiasm for achieving a '...

Re: Aging/distressing

That is working really well for you. Another trick you could try, on the raw wood, run a Stanley knife along the outer top edge of the frames, shaving off just the slightest amount and only incidental here and there. Then rub around with 320grit paper to blend in the effect. This will take off the c...

Re: Aging/distressing

Your method is good. Go for multiple coats of paint. Rub a little wax on to the edges between coats, that makes it quick to rub through into the bottom colour. After the paint has dried, give the frame an overglaze with a transparent antique tone solution. This will knock back the rather garish look...

Re: Morso Blades Fitting / Bad Cuts

Whilst I can't make any comment on the condition of the blades, I would first remove them from the Morso and then clean both the surface of the block and the back surface of the blades with some white spirits and 0000 wire wool. It is essential that both surfaces are entirely clean and free from any...

Re: Suggestions for hanging hardware for removable back frames

You could go for a 'key-hole' hanger.
Have a look at them on Amazon or other.

You would need to make a slot into the frame back with a suitable sized drill bit and wood chisel, then screw the hanger plate over it.

Re: Washi Tape: Success & Where To Buy?

The best way to find out is to buy some and see what you get. But think about what might give you some grief. How easy is it going to be running this tape, or any tape, over a length of slip without creating a crease or fold? Will the tape fold easily across the front edge and or into any small scoo...

Re: How cut the mat board?

The print is called "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" and if you Google up images of the original artwork, the 'signature' on the right of the print doesn't exist. The artist's signature is on the top left of the image. The print was obviously cut from a book collection and I'm guessing that t...
