At least 60% of our business is chop frames, the rest is substantially hand-finished work on plain woods, mainly from R&H.

By this means we can have a stunning display of mouldings on the wall - something for every need - and tie up very little money in stock. No wastage either, if it doesn't sell ...

When oversize mounts are required, we achieve a similar result to Jerome but without the inconvenience of dismantling the machine.

We use a heavy 48 inch engineers' staightedge and a Logan 2000 hand-held mountcutter. The straightedge can be slid along a pencil line as needed, whilst the Logan ...

Briwax is IMHO the best finishing wax available, in any case I can't abide the "perfumed" smell of Black Bison! It is available in Clear and a range of tints from Rose and Hollis among others. See: http://www.briwax.co.uk/products/briwax.html

Hello Áine,

I do a lot of hand finishing, but my experience of modifying existing finishes has not always been good. I assume the finish is on a wood moulding? If so, try this: first, rub down gently with 00 grade wire wool or very fine glasspaper to provide a "key", then apply a coat of artists ...

Couldn't agree more re. Rose & Hollis. One of our oldest suppliers in the trade. Top service, quality product, good prices and they're friendly into the bargain!

Try Nielsen's Oakwoods range. I'm at home at the moment, so don't have the sample to hand. It may not be 40mm though...

Sorry, incomplete answer. Cymraeg is the language, Cymreig is "Welsh" (belonging to Wales), Cymro - a Welshman, Cymraes - a Welshwoman. The country is Cymru.

Is this off topic?

Miaow Moglet!

Daler Rowney do a pearlescent tinting medium which can be mixed with any of their acrylic colours. I've seen very attractive frames produced with its use. See http://www.daler-rowney.com/prod_catalo ... 4&brand=23

I like the idea of signmaker's vinyl too, paticularly as we have a signmaker next door to our workshop! Perhaps the shrinkage issue could be got over by cutting the window in the mount first, then applying the vinyl and turning an inch or so onto the back. This would also give a glossy bevel and do ...

Thanks to Jerome and Ormond for the Bainbridge suggestion. We do have samples of these boards, but they fall short of the customer's spec.

Formica is a nice idea: we have some which we use for mounting Ilfochrome/Cibachromes on. Cutting a clean edge is possible using a very sharp lubricated blade ...

Gloss finish black mountboard

Can anyone please point me in the direction of black gloss mountboard? A customer has made the request after seeing a picture mounted with this in Canada.

I've been in the trade for 20 years and don't recall ever seeing such a thing, but then again, maybe I've forgotten!

The core colour is ...

Martin is spot on.

Spring terminations need to be lubricated. I have always used Molyslip grease. This stays where you put it and seems to be particularly suitable for heavily loaded points where limited movement takes place.

We use LION steel ribbon band clamps, part No 1016 or 1017. Quite expensive, but excellent for difficult mouldings, ours have been in continous use for ten years or. They can be found here: http://www.lionpic.co.uk/index.php?mode=search&sess_id=45j6ywqcuk0r304u8dk8k8uu3ve8til6&text1=band+clamp&x=61 ...
