Re: Self adhesive boards for mounting photos

I noticed that these replies are considering the photos as 'large'... I should perhaps clarify that they are 20x30cm rather than 20x30 inches which might make a difference. Apologies for any confusion caused!!

Re: Self adhesive boards for mounting photos

Thanks for your ideas on this. I have a bit of homework to do in finding the three videos - thanks as always Pete. A bit of background to what is being framed first. The subject is a military course photo that is not terribly significant. Course photos tend to be popular in the military and it's the...

Self adhesive boards for mounting photos

Hi, Another fairly basic question from a newbie... I have a few photos to frame that are 30x20 and have a fairly significant curl. It's a non-conservation job and I was thinking about using a self adhesive board. I had a bit of Daler Rowney repositionable board which I used as a trial and found the ...

Re: Framers vice

It sounds like the Axminster vice gets the nod of approval. I guess I need to buy direct from them or make an offer on the used one.

Thank you.

Hi Jon,

Would that be one of the Stanley ones? That might just be of interest. Any idea what sort of costs are involved in shipping?

Thanks,

Re: Cutting glass

Thank you for the replies. I'm always impressed at how generous total strangers can be to others on the internet. It restores your faith in humanity! Chris understands where I am at right now with the glass cutting. It really is too hit or miss to be reliable and sustainable. I will order a decent s...

Cutting glass

I must admit I am having trouble cutting larger pieces of glass cleanly without breaking it and wonder whether there are any tips anyone can offer. The workshop is currently a bit temporary but I'm not sure I really want to blame the bench and the tools for the problems! To date I have just been wor...

Framers vice

I'm new to the framing game and on the look out for a framers vice. Has anyone got an unused one or could recommend one? I see Lion have one for £126 https://www.lionpic.co.uk/search?q=vice or Axminster Tools do a similar looking one for £60 https://www.axminster.co.uk/axcaliber-mitre-vice-103374 An...

Re: Cassis wedges compatible with Gielle underpinned?

Thanks once again for the helpful advice. I've had more success with the underpinner over the weekend trying out the Cassis 7mm and 10mm wedges a few softwood frames. I put my first two oak frames together today using 7mm wedges which just about went in! I seem to be very reliant on my band clamp to...

Re: Cassis wedges compatible with Gielle underpinned?

Thanks for the suggestions. It would seem that Oak frames are going to be more complex... I had heard this would be the case! The underpinner has done an ok job on some softwood mouldings I've been using today albeit I have needed a band clamp to really close up the mitres. With 7mm wedges the end r...

Re: Cassis wedges compatible with Gielle underpinned?

Thank you for the friendly welcome and helpful advice. Following delivery of some mouldings today I’ve spent some time on the underpinner. Certainly the 7mm wedges seem fine going into softwood but further investigation with longer wedges and with oak is needed before I will be sure. On the subject ...

Re: Cassis wedges compatible with Gielle underpinned?

Thanks Dave. That was going to be my next step. I acquired my equipment from someone based in Leatherhead and he used Wessex for his supplies as they were 5 minutes away. I did note that Lion has a universal wedge that is compatible with Gielle but not Cassis which made me wonder if this might be a ...

Cassis wedges compatible with Gielle underpinned?

Hi, I’m very new to framing and have some fairly old kit that I am gradually learning about. The Gielle underpinner came with a limited supply of wedges that have now been used up and I have been given some Cassis wedges that don’t seem to work as well. Possibly I’m doing something silly or wrong. A...
