Platform Mounting
In another thread the subject of Platform Mounting came up, and it seems that some framers are not yet acquainted with this technique. I developed this method some years ago to use with my CMC, to make fast, low-cost, low-profile, non-adhesive, reversible attachments for documents, letters, photos ...

Count me among the advocates of framing a high quality digital reproduction with ordinary methods and materials. Then, place the original in safe storage, such as in a sealed box made for archival storage, kept is a clean, dark, climate controlled environment.

How about clear polyester film (Mylar-D) encapsulation? Cut two sheets about 2" larger than the item and on the convex side of one of them, apply strips of 1/4" wide fillet tape (NOT ATG) within 1/4" of the item's edges. Position the item and the lay on the top sheet, convex side down. Apply weight ...

It succeeds in reality, for whatever that's worth.poliopete wrote:If this fixing method "fails on the customer's perception element" and on the "framer perception element" then where does it succeed? and what's the point.

In the USA you can buy it from most suppliers of conservation materials, plus a couple of framing suppliers, but I don;t know about sources in the UK.
3 mil is my favorite because it creases most sharply and it most inconspicuous in use, but 5 mil or 7 mil would be more forgiving of ...

Thank you, Mark. By the way, white 4 mm fluted polypropylene is my favorite worktable cover, as well. Cheap, cleanable, replaceable, non-abrasive.

Hello Mark:
The clear films tested by the United States Library of Congress are the ones I have generally recommended to American framers. These are free of possibly-reactive chemical coatings, which are often applied to clear industrial films for the purpose of increasing paint/ink/glue adhesion ...

Don't you Brits still use cord instead of wire?

Here are pictures of a similar table, including one showing the assembly. It is 12 feet x 3 feet x 42" tall, set up for dry mounting and vertical storage.

Re: Workbench
My recommendation would be to build the table out of 1/2" thick melamine-covered particle board, except use 3/4" for the top. You can attach slats to the bottom panel and underside of the top in mirror-image, with grooves to slide the vertical parts in. This table would go together like a puzzle. Be ...

Re: Float mounting tape?
Another possibility would be to attach the boards using what I call Formed Rod Mounts; spring steel "piano wire" bent to fit (in this case, into hook shapes conforming to the edges), covered in polyolefin shrink tubing. The shrink tubing is an electrical-industry product used to insulate wire ...

Thanks for your replies. Am I right in thinking th mylar would pass under the cover of the book, and theough slits in the mountboard behind it? Yes, that is correct. Make the two horizontal slots in the mounting substrate the same width as the vertical sheet of clear film, and place them slightly ...

Re: Framing a paperback
If the book is worth anything, then it shouldn't be framed. It's very bad indeed for a book for it to hang like that.
If the book is not worth anything then take a pot of PVA and stick the pages together and stick it to the backing board.

Re: double sided frame
For this I might use a Recto-Verso Platform Mount, which holds the paper's edges without the need of any adhesive in direct contact. If you have a computerized mat cutter (Oh, sorry...computerised mount cutter :giggle: ) it is quite easy to construct. Just be sure to make the Platform opening about ...
