Re: Frame Critique
You have a good star; however, I do see a need for that "wow" factor. 1. Your painted finishes should be cleaned up a bit at the union between the gilding and the painted surfaces. The transition should be a crisp straight line. 2. I see a need for a bit of finish sanding before the wax is...

Accounting and economics here.
Remember this old adage "you have happier customers if you lower your price than to increase it".

Re: Pricing help
Just remember that my ambition is to assist. This is one of many things that is not always taught in art schools. I have also taught would be inventors the need to know how to price things correctly.

Re: Pricing help
The fact is that £64(without VAT taxes - as that is a constant pass though amount) is just not enough. You have to make a profit on just about every function of a gallery, frame shop or whatever, to put food on your table. Have you done any real "cost accounting" as to what you want as a p...

Re: Pricing help
One factor that I noted is you only have material costs and an added markup in your calculations. Being from the US, one factor is missing. That is the labor charges for assembly of the parts into a frame. We call that a "fitting" charge. Not seeing the actual formulas behind each item (mo...

Re: Do you sand between gesso layers or after gessoing is done?
To bring back the sharp corners and other detail there are special tools that are used to "re-carve" the fine details. I learned it as the French term "repose" (sp) with a long "A" sound at the end. https://shop.stuartstevenson.co.uk/products/gesso-recutting-tools https...

Re: Do you sand between gesso layers or after gessoing is done?
I my memory was incorrect regarding my formula as I have not made gesso in several years.
I should have written:
2 parts water, 8 parts calcium carbonate(whiting), and 4 parts stock RSG(16gm per 8 oz. - 235ml)
I also add 15 ml of linseed oil to add a little flexibility to the mixture.

Re: Do you sand between gesso layers or after gessoing is done?
Thick or thin, gesso, traditional or acrylic, will reduce the detail of any design or detail when applied. I am having a problem with your formula for traditional gesso in that there is no additional water being added. The formula that I have used for over 35 years has been 2 parts water, 4 parts ca...

Re: Hello! Looking for some workshop layout advice.
You might want to visit several frame shops in your area to look at their setups. A rolling tool cart or two might be a good idea. You can get a "mechanics" rolling tool cart and modify it to your needs. https://www.harborfreight.com/tool-storage-organization/tool-storage/30-in-5-drawer-me...

Re: Hello! Looking for some workshop layout advice.
My tables and those of many others were limited to 1.2 x 2.4m (48x96) sheet stock. Then you also have to consider all the storage room you need in that room. Racks for board and glass, tools and other equipment, finished products, etc. My "clean area" of my current home shop is about the s...

Re: Hello! Looking for some workshop layout advice.
Are you cutting and assembling frames in the same room? What is the maximum size of the art you want to frame?
If you are purchasing preassemble frames, you can get away with less room than if you are making frames as this task can contaminate your frame fitting area.

Did you backup your previous version? If not, you should have.
If you did, you can just open the backed up version and use it.

With that volume you need an industrial shrink wrap tunnel to do the shrinking. These can be found under "industrial packaging equipment".

Check with any of a number of on-line sellers and forums in the UK. Specify the size of the machine you are looking for (standard size sheets or oversized sheet). Note that there are machines for small, single person shops as well as for production shops.

Can you explain what the word "digital" has to do with a mount cutter? All the ones that I have used over the many decades have been: manual bar style, hand operated, pneumatic, or computer controlled.
Re: Art glass
You didn't describe what type of glass and it's shape. After your response to inserting wood shims around the border of the frame that acts like a bezzle around the art, similar to a frame for a "collector plate" or sheet of mirror my response would have been different. Depending on the ty...

Re: Best wire for stitching fabric works
In most cases the proper material for this task is to use is HD natural thread. It has been used to attach buttons to the front of upholstered furniture for centuries. If you insist on metal wire, stainless steel is about the only choice.
