Re: Underpinning - How?

I’m using a CS79 so I’ll try removing the pad and giving it a go.

Re: Underpinning - How?

It’s interesting you say about using a hard pad. The pad on my underpinned is soft and pretty worn now. I noticed a thread had appeared about hacks with framing machinery and it was mentioned about using some Perspex as a hard back but doubling up as a window to check the mitre. This is genius and I...

Re: Underpinning - How?

When using the hoffman, do you specify the depth of the cut and then insert the key and flush cut to length? Is that how the machine works?

Re: Underpinning - How?

I'm not sure how this ended up on a second version of my thread... But thanks so much for the reply, Vintage. As mentioned, I don't mind the clamping method, it always had given me superior results. I just wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong. I make these particular frames as premade, and so ...

Re: Underpinning - How?

Hi Mark,

I Have not checked that.

I bought the underpinner from a framer who was selling some old equipment that had been in use so I'd assumed it was ready to go. I will definitely give it a check though. Thanks for that.

Underpinning - How?

Ok, So this is a bit embarrassing but I'm not sure how to get really tight miters with the under pinner and I'm hoping someone can offer some advice. I've got a basic underpinner - the CS79 but every time I try to pin my small oak mouldings, it seems to not pull together the mitres. I've tried both ...

Re: Bare wood mouldings

Thanks for the input guys. Anyways, I'm in a very unique position at the moment where the time spent making my own (and the energy expenditure) doesn't really warrant me spending the additional - I didn't realist it would be quite that much more expensive, but as Justin points out, a profit must be ...

Re: Bare wood mouldings

Thanks all, for the replies. I managed to get a copy of a catalogue from a very helpful poster in this thread and I'm really surprised at the costs. According to the catalogue prices (not including any bulk buy discount), it looks like it's around 4 times as expensive to buy the mouldings from R&...

Re: Bare wood mouldings

Thanks for the reply, Justin. I’ve just had a quick look at their website and it seems there is no obvious way to set up an account. Is it something I’d have to do by email or over the phone? And, if you use them, would you know if you need to place a minimum price order before they’ll deal with you...

Bare wood mouldings

Evening all, Historically, I’ve always made my own mouldings, being a woodworker rather than a framer. Because of this, I’ve never bought pre made mouldings and so I’m not sure where is the best place to get bare wood mouldings in Oak and Ash at a decent price. I have no idea what I can expect to pa...

Re: Splines, who uses them

Rafe, If you have a table saw, I would recommend making one of two jigs. One that rides on the fence with two \ / pieces of wood glued to it at 45 degrees to allow the corner of the frame point directly down towards the table. The other is a 45 degree 'sled' that actually sits on the table and doesn...

Thanks GeoSpectrum.

I knew about the 100% AIA. I didn't realise it continued after the first year at 18%

Thanks for the link.

Re: Tax on business startup

Thanks for the link Rainbow. I've read through those pages. The question I'm asking is somewhat slightly more specific. GeoSpectrum, I am aware of the different legal structures and how one may be more beneficial than the other, but at the moment, that's not what I'm trying to find out. My question ...

Re: Tax on business startup

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I have been keeping as many receipts as possible, both paper and email invoices and I'm going to put these all on a spreadsheet so when I do see an accountant, I can give this to them. I just wanted to learn a little bit before I got to that stage so I can do some...

Tax on business startup

Hi guys/gals, First of all, I'm not asking for financial advice that I'm going to act upon, I would just like some info from people who've been there before. My question is about capital allowances for new businesses. More specifically, what you can call a 'capital expense' and how you can use these...

Re: Splines, who uses them

I use splines almost every time in my hardwood frames. If its supposed to be part of the design, ill use a contrasting wood. If not, ill use the same species. If you're going to do splines, a table saw is a perfect way to do them if you make a jig. You'll also want a flat bottom grooving blade other...

Re: Suggested suppliers non trade

Hi Justin, I also agree about the protection of the artwork being framed along with training on the subject. I've been researching how to make sure that whatever I frame is protected as well as the correct way to construct the package to be framed. Once the Covid stuff calms down a bit, I will look ...

Re: Wanted - Morso

Hi Iain,

Is the price at all flexible?

Its just I've seen quite a few go on this forum for a bit less and some have also included a spare set of blades. Obviously I'd like to get a spare set so I can keep a set on the machine while the spares are off for sharpening.

Cheers,
Tom
