Re: air compressor

I'm no expert, but I think this compressor is far too small to run a underpinner like the mingraf 4. I would think the 0.88cfm and 9 litre tank will mean this just can't cope with the air needed to run an underpinner...these types of compressors need to rest between filling cycles and this one will ...

Re: Edge-less canvas stretcher.

I rather like the idea, is something a bit different, both for hanging directly on the wall and in a tray frame. I think it would also work well on the deep box canvases which I find quite ugly looking, I think I recall a time when the deep box canvases were a pretty new thing, now they are everywhe...

Re: Any wisdom appreciated!

Hello Candida, I started down the hand finishing route because of seeing similar frames in the galleries in my home village (Broadway), wondering how they were made... Of course there are many methods to get something similar looking, but the really good quality ones need to be made with gesso (calc...

Re: RSG (gluesize)

Hi Dermot,
I use around 1:12 ratio, I vary it a little bit with some boles being really watery and some much drier and solid.

Re: RSG (gluesize)

Like Dermot, I use the Manetti RSG from Gold Leaf Supplies, it was me telling GLS about RSG problems and being unhappy with many brands that they said the Manetti was getting lots of positive comments from users. I have tried as many brands and sources as I can find and find it's the best so far. Re...

Re: You Tube Video - The Mount Package

The approx 2mm gap is the standard practice at the British Museum for mounting and making window mounts... I wonder what their reason is for doing it? I'm not saying do it just because they do, but I imagine they do it for a reason. I would have thought that it is to do with the fact that the piece ...

That deep bevel maybe a wooden slip like R&H A231 or Arqadia 151400000
In the photo it looks painted to me...

I think Simons did something similar to the outer moulding, 5408/7008 is about 19mm deep x 54mm wide...

Re: Wanted: vertical cutting head for Keencut Laser 1200

I'm sure you have done this... but have you checked if Keencut have any parts? I seem to remember they were quite good at sending parts when I had a Laser years ago, even though it was no longer made.

Re: Pre framing storage

Big plan chests are great, I also have a tall file drawer, with 30 drawers, each is about 14" x 9" x 1" so is good for lots of small works before framing. Right angle brackets with some timber and foam padding for hanging up frames, I have round dowel and pipe cladding on mine but thi...

Re: Float mounting a photograph

You mention you want to keep the photograph flat, if you plan to use paper hinges of any sort then it's not going to be or stay flat so I would be aware of that from the start, and adding more hinges will if anything cause more ripples and cockles in the paper... If you want to float mount a photogr...

Re: Acrylic vs Styrene

I think there's a huge difference, in my experience styrene is really poor when compared against cast or extruded acrylic... it scratches really easy is the most noticeable, in fact you only have to look at it or wipe with a duster and it starts getting marks, also acrylic has some longevity regardi...

Re: identify moulding

I think the scoop one with gold outer might be from Ashworth and Thompson, they do it in two sizes.

Here's another web page about these machines, with some diagrams http://www.woodworkersinstitute.com/furniture-cabinetmaking/techniques/workshop-jigs/workshop-wednesdays-ripple-moulding-for-the-21st-century/ And another page here, with a simplified but still apparently very effective machine: http:/...

Re: Dutch ripple moulding.... HELP !!

These are the mouldings I have... no idea where I got the pale wood one from, might have even come from somewhere like B&Q... the others are from Austria. As an alternative to carving, you could very easily make a good quality mould from an existing frame or a moulding, and just cast them and ap...
