Re: Newbie Q - Frame Support

You can fix braces to the back to mitigate bowing of a thin moulding. I've used strips of 2.5 MDF in the past. Also add steel 'L' mending plates on the corners. It works up to a point but it's a slightly half-arsed solution. :P * The Wessex subframes have a neat bevel on the inside that allows you t...

Re: Newbie Q - Frame Support

For something that size and with that moulding width you really need a subframe. That is a support frame that goes behind and takes the weight of the entire inner package. Wessex do suitable sections, but for max strength you can make your own from PSE timber. It should be the same size as the backi...

Re: Double Mounting

Coloured mounts really are an '80s thing. I rarely use strongly coloured mounts nowadays and stick to mainly pale, neutral shades with just a hint of colour. People think a colour in the mount will 'pick up' a colour in the image. It won't. It's a heavy-handed method used by people who don't really ...

Re: “I’ll keep that… it come in handy!”

I have a BIG shed full of 'useful' bits. It's 30ft long and 12ft wide. Most of it is the remnants of a job lot of moulding I bought in 2006. I've cherry-picked all the good stuff and used it. The rest is stuff that is perfectly good but I just have no use for nowadays. Also vast heaps of boxes full ...

Re: Texturing Gel?

This was a popular thing in times gone by. Sometimes a print would be mounted to canvas and put on stretcher bars to better emulate the look of an original. I've had people come to me with 'granny's oil painting' for a valuation only to be informed that it was a print and worth next to nothing. It g...

Ooh, can I jump on and ask what you mean about band clamps Prospero? Your ones without corners that you can underpin? The one I have from Screwfix, I think I could take the plastic corners off so it is just the screw/handle/ratchtety thing and the strap. Is that essentially the same or are your one...

Re: Keencut Ultimat Futura Problem

The cutter depends on a good solid base. A slight dip will cause this problem. You could try adding a few shims of
card or whatever underneath and see if it's any better. Mountcutters work best when installed in a permanent position.

Re: Perfect Joins

I do a lot of big chunky frames and I like to slightly over-engineer the joins. The fact is that over a certain size frame the sheer weight of a big moulding tends to work against it. You have a bigger glue area, but the glued strength depends on tight joints and even contact across the face. With t...

Re: Bevel Cutting Jombo Mountcard

Do you mean the plain wood that will act as my boarder cannot touch the glass. What would happen if it did? I should have said.... Some painted surfaces produce strange optical effects when glass is laid on them. I believe the proper term is "Newton's Rings". Pale colours in particular sh...

Re: Bevel Cutting Jombo Mountcard

For something that scale you maybe should abandon the card mount concept in favour of a wood profile mitred and joined like a frame. Rose & Hollis do a very useful plain wood that can be employed for this purpose ref A231. There is also A245 which the same size but with a cove rather than a beve...

Re: hardboard backing for canvas

I've used Unibond in the past with success. It's basically wood glue diluted a bit. The key thing is to get even pressure on until the glue has set - 24 hrs is my preference. Put the board/canvas between two heavy boards (19mm Chipboard?) with sheets of plastic to stop any oozes sticking to the heav...

Re: Antique frames re sized needed? Also fabric mounts

If they are non-linear i.e. with fancy corners and applied ornaments, then they are next to impossible to resize. You are better having the made to order. There are several very good companies who can make them to order, including some on this Forum. :D As for mounts they can be cut from ready-cover...

Re: Shipping Large Oil Painting from UK to USA?

Make sure it's adequately insured. A chap I know had a rolled canvas that was shopped from the States. The
customs took it out to examine it and totally destroyed it trying to get it back in the tube. It was valued at
several thousand pounds which he managed to recoup.

One nice touch is to black out the underside of the rebate with a fat marker. This prevents the edge of the mirror
reflecting any scruffy bits. It looks cleaner. :D

I have a loudspeaker cabinet that I made at school in 1968. :D Solid oak. I waxed/polished it as per the teacher's instructions and it looks as good now as the day it was made. I rarely use oak/ash for frames but when I do and want a natural finish I put on two coats of bleached shellac before waxin...

It's in a book called "The Complete Guide to Picture Framing" by Jenny Rodwell and George Short. Published by Macdonald & Co. 1986. :D
Interesting book but a bit 'Old School' now.

I have see similar frames in books described as 'Aschkar' frames, with corners formed the same way. But that
might refer to a a specific design.

Re: Large vintage posters - help please

If you look at my diagram up there^ you'll see that there is a bit of 'jiggle room' for the paper. The outer edge of the slip is raised slightly to lift the slip so the edge of the paper is unrestricted. I typically use Linen tape, but whatever you use it should be a tad thicker than the paper. A 30...
