Do you mean bowing outwards at the back?

If so they are too tight in the frame. A big piece of board will expand a lot with any increase in humidity.

If you mounted them on 'grey' board that is asking for trouble unfortunately. :?

What we have here is a very up-market clipframe. Good luck polishing the edges. Tell them you have some invisble moulding in stock, but you can't find it. OK. Joking over. There are some things that with the best will in the world just aren't practical and maybe this is one of them.

Heres one I did much earlier. I think this came out of same book. http://www.petrbnsfineart.com/images/mauntsample001.jpg Excuse the bit missing and wonky lines. It has come unstuck in places though handling. No whitecore when I did it either. Now that one is mind-boggling. More useful for demonstra...

Hi Fionnuala. :D I think I know whay you mean. Prob is, this sort of thing is near impossible to explain without actually demonstrating it on an actual mountcutter. :? But it's not difficult. Slightly tedious, perhaps. You have to concentrate. The more complex the corner, the trickier it is to visua...

Two 'young executives', Roger and Henry, are in a in a wine bar. They are having a quiet drink and swapping a few stories. Suddenly Roger hears a beeping noise and Henry puts his hand to the side of his face and starts talking. When he is finished talking he sees his friend looking puzzled and says,...

Actually, there is a scientific term for what you have just experienced.

It's the "onedamnthingafteranother" principle.

Re: Nailed mitres

A bit of an obvious one when you think about it, but I only thought about it when I first saw a frame done like it some years ago. When you have to nail mitres, if you only do it from below the bottom corners and above the top corners, then there are no nail holes to fill on the sides and therefore...

Surround the whole board. Makes the whole thing neater. If everything is level at the back. You are using what is basically scrap anyway. I tend to put the strips round without sticking the painting down first. Then attach the painting to the strips with a short bit of tape on each side. easi...

I just got around to trying the Newberry method today. The silks only had about 15mm border max and I needed about 5mm showing. This meant only a tiny amount to fold under the foamcore which didn't really give it a chance to grip. And the cutout in the foamcore was only about 3mm inside the mount wi...

Goto No.1 and stop. The tape is unknown to me. Pressure sensitive. It looks like the type of stuff better suited to hinging mount to backing or wrapping bevels. Whats more, there appears to be two layers. :? Fortunately who ever mounted it left far too wide a margin around the image so The bumps wil...

Ditto with knobs on. It might be worth checking local timber merchants/furniture makers as some firms have a guy who is sh*t-hot on mouldings. And they usually have stocks of oak/ash. (Not obeche unfortunately). And they will generally run you up and odd length or two if you ask nicely. My loc...

What Robo said.... :)

I get these all the time. Great way to use up all those silly long bits of mb that accumulate. To save a bit of time, don't bother measuring /trimming the strips to fit. Stick oversize bits on first, turn the mount face-up and trim off the excess.

It's a good cure for the cheapskates who "don't want a heavy frame". You show them the skinniest wood frame possible and still it's too heavy. Of course most of the time they are angling for cheaper rather than narrower. It's then that I pull out the ally samples and inform them that this ...

Yep. :D Dropouts, offcuts and redundant colours. Been using up a load of Alphamat that is a weird colour I got for a job and then changed my mind.
For super-duper jobs 8ply rag from whoever is convienient at the time.
SH do a 2 ply barrier board, but it is no good for hinging onto.
