Re: Hard or softwood wedges for this moulding?
I suspected it wasn't true wenge but I wasn't sure. I've tried softwood wedges and they seem OK so I'll use those. Thanks for the advice.

Hard or softwood wedges for this moulding?
I'm working with this wenge moulding from Frinton, who are now on holiday unfortunately so I can't ask them. I'm not sure whether to use wedges for hard or soft wood. It's described as wenge but that might be just the veneer. It's certainly quite hard to cut, but whether that makes it hard enough fo...

Re: Can anyone identify this print please
Thanks, both. I've only been sent an image of it so I can't check for myself whether there's any ID on the print, but the owner says not. I think it probably is very old so I wouldn't be surprised if it was out of print.

Can anyone identify this print please
This print is obviously in very poor condition and the owner would like to buy a new replacement for framing. Does anyone recognise it please?

Re: Ideas for text
I'd also look at using a handmade paper, something that gave the appearance of vintage paper from the same period as the photograph. I might even consider whether to have it handwritten in ink by a calligrapher, in which case the calligrapher would need to choose a suitable paper for the ink. Whatev...

Re: Ideas for text
I'd want to keep the elephant image central, as the focal point. So I'd consider splitting the text, either landscape or portrait as per the attached examples which I've mocked up on my web site: http://www.polkadotpicturesleeds.co.uk/elephant

Re: Wanted - A Guido Borelli Print - Urgent
Have you seen this site : http://fineartamerica.com/art/all/guido+borelli/all It's got 524 different Borelli prints for sale, and loads of different sizes. They're based in the UK so if they've got the one you want, you could hopefully get it quicky. Edit: Oh sorry, I've just seen that you've tried ...

Re: Joining a narrow profile
Ah, thank you, that makes perfect sense now!IFGL wrote:Because it is too narrow to have more than one, when you put in a wedge it has to displace the wood some how, either by compression, or splitting it, too many wedges too close together will give an uneven face weakening the glued joint.

Re: Joining a narrow profile
I've been puzzling over this and I still don't understand why a second wedge would weaken the join rather than strengthen it. Would you mind explaining why this is the case. Thanks.prospero wrote:The second wedge position will tend to weaken the join rather than add strength.

    I've done several pictures for someone who brings me vintage framed pictures that he's picked up at auctions, and wants me to fit different prints into the frames, with a new mount. This customer has a Victorian house which he's filled with vintage furniture and artefacts, a...

Re: How to value an original painted in 1882
Not long ago I took a vintage painting to an auction house with a view to it going in a sale. It was by an artist who had been a member of a very prominent and respected group at the turn of the 19th/20th century. I could see from the online prices that the artist's paintings sold for anything from ...

Storing black core mountboard
I'm a little concerned about stacking black core mountboard in case there's a risk of the black back rubbing against a white or light-coloured face of the board below and leaving a mark. Can anyone either put my mind at rest, am I right to be concerned? Thanks.

Using self-adhesive board with marker-pen pictures
I've got a series of pictures to frame, which are caricatures done with marker pens and coloured pencils, just under A3 size and perhaps about 20 years old. They have been done on ordinary copy paper, and the marker pens have bled through to the back. The paper is a bit wavy, so I was planning to fl...

Re: Framing a cut-to-size canvas
PS. @caro - Although I don't know the value of the painting, I do know that the customer doesn't want to spend too much on the framing(!) so whilst stitching a border and then stretching that over bars is a good idea, I'm afraid I don't think the customer would want to pay for that extra work.
