Offcuts

Does anyone have any bright ideas on the best way to keep/file offcuts. I'm currently putting them in a large box and never seem to use any! What a waste  I also have a 'Proteus' framing table with mount bays under the work top. I find that the sheets of mount card bend, is there a clever way o...

I find I get the same results when cutting soft wood like pine regardless of how sharp the blades are. One contributing factor to this is that there is a little sideways play in the rebate supports. I find by resting my figer on the top of the rebate spindle and pulling it to the side when making th...

It cracks me up!

I am currently gessoing a deep beveled slip which fits into the aperture of the mount. The problem of cracks appearing in the corner is worrying; is there any way of reinforcing the gesso to protect against cracking, i.e. by applying Shellac to the gesso or will this affect it?!

I've reached a decision to display 200 mouldings and have just finished installing the wooden battons ready to receive my J-Rails. Thank you all for your input and when done I will post a photo on the website www.crframing.co.uk [shameless plug]

Displaying chevrons

I have just binned all the molding samples I haven't used in the last 6-12 months and now I have a pathetic number of 'favourites' of which the clients' eye is drawn to on entering the workshop. The question is how many moldings should one display; the whole lot, a select few or none at all?

Thanks for your reply Jeyelle, I have asked around and you're right! Those handy people at Wessex Pictures can supply 10mm in 2440 x 1220 sheets :P Their website is http://www.wessex-pictures.co.uk for your info. Ed

Cold press

I currently use an Ademco 24" press but the photo hangs out the side so I have to take 4 bites to get the whole area bonded. I use a foam matress so I don't get bite marks but it's just the heat which causes the foamboard to bend me thinks. Do they make jumbo 10mm?

Substrates for large photographs

I've been dry mounting 36" x 36" photographs on 10mm foamboard made from two sheets of 5mm board mounted together. This works OK to a certain degree but when dealing with large areas of foamboard it is very susceptible to warping :x I'm float framing these within a frame with a 1/2" g...

Double sided frames

A client has just bought in a double sided advert and inevitably she likes both sides. I've made some ash moulding with a routed channel up the middle to slot the glass/artwork sandwich into but how on earth does one hang it so it can be flipped around easily without having to uncrew unsightly d-rin...

Gesso grief

Hi Jerry, I been following your instructions to the T but I have a couple of problems still occuring. The first one is that the squirrel brush I am using tends to hold on to the gesso too much and I find I have to slap the gesso on to get any result, hence more bubbles. The problem with this is a) i...

Docket sequence

John, I am having difficulty in resequencing my docket numbers. The system I have been using uses the string: MMYY001 so job number 5 of Jan 2005 would be 0105005. I know it's probably not the best way of doing things but EstLite does not like me choosing a number less than the last docket number wh...

Grease on mountboard

I recently received a number of commisions [sp.] from an artist who drew direct onto her medium taped onto a pre cut mount so that she drew through the aperture. When coming to draw mount lines I noticed that the colour skipped over areas where her hands had rested and deposited grease. I used a new...

Moulding width

Hello, I've just experienced an annoying habit of EstLite - and I'm first to own up to something I'm doing wrong but any ideas would be v.greatful. When adding new mouldings to the database, one of the fields is the moulding width. I've just had one invoice with 2 jobs on and the software keeps uppi...

Washlines

Thanks for your advice. What I did in the end was to make a stencil using Magic Tape using the mount lines as tramlines on either side and add the wash in the centre of the cutout. This worked great except you have to be careful not to press the tape down too much as it can rip the face paper off th...

Gesso - too many bubbles!

As a young paduan in the art of making gesso, I am finding too many air bubbles appearing when it starts to dry on the moulding! I have been reading McTaggarts Guide to Gilding and am aware that too much stirring can cause this. I kept stirring to a minimum but had to do some otherwise my gesso woul...

Blisters on 5mm Foamboard

I recently received a batch of 5mm Foamboard and blisters formed beneath the clay coated white board. They have appeared both during storage and after putting through a Dry Mounting Press so I guess heat is removed from the equation! I have heard of manufacturing problems, has anyone else found sim...
