Re: Cleaning Up an Old Frame

Thank you, iorek for the compliment. There is definitely a benefit in posting say, reels on Instagram. It does take a lot of dedication however and I found that after a brief period of enthusiasm it's too easy to move on and forget about keeping up the posts. I think the real benefit comes with cons...

Cleaning Up an Old Frame

I finished this frame a few weeks ago. IMG_3490.JPG Whilst there was a lot of work involved in remaking all the losses and various other repairs and re-gilds, most of the time spent was on cleaning up the grimy gilding. During some previous 'restoration' it had been over-cleaned in places and then d...

Will the council be interested in charging you business rates as well as any rent?

Yes, we had Justin in the house, yesterday.

He talked of clean work-benches, swept floors, organised workshops.

'Made me feel quite uncomfortable.

Totally agree with Justin.

It's a B&B letter - bullshit and bluster.

"Do not engage" - it tends to annoy them even more.

Re: Gold Slip / Should it touch the artwork?

Your idea of using a mountboard barrier is probably the best, What harm can it do, even if the slip is an inert material. If you want to be a bit precious, consider that the pressure adhesive on the foil tape may or may not be to the highest standards of conservation. When you mentioned - "pres...

Re: Wiping dust from photographs

This isn't your fault and has nothing to do with your workmanship. You already mentioned that the mount was a bit 'raggedy'. That's where the problem lies - a cheap mass-produced mount, poorly cut and shedding flecks onto the photo. It's a graduation photograph, bless. Who gets one of those? My advi...

I think you should PM Timh because he only looks on here occasionally.

He'll get notification of your PM in his e-mail in-box.

That's Moon Gold, water-gilded and rubbed back over a dark red bole.

You can get it from either Gold Leaf Supplies or Wrights of Lymm.

Re: Solid White Oak or Oak Tray moulding

You could use F8 Oak from Rose & Hollis. It's a flat 12mm thick fillet, 47mm wide.
Join it up to size on the vertical.

Then make a flat frame with say, F5 but a bit smaller than the F8 frame. Nail/screw this to the base so you won't see it from the sides and there you should have it.

Re: Lost Morso tool

I don't own a Morso

'Sold it years ago.

That's why I've got the tool you're looking for.
You can have it as long as you pay the postage to send it to you. It's all quite rusty now, but will clean up with some light oil and wire-wool.
PM me with your address and I'll pop it in a Jiffy bag.

Re: Single Use Plastic Packaging.

I don't buy in pre-finished mouldings so I have no experience of the type of packaging you're talking about. But I think it's all a result of framers complaining about the condition of mouldings received through the couriers. I'd imagine Lion were trying to give as much protection as possible before...

Re: Texturing Gel?

I've never used the stuff, which leaves me eminently qualified to comment on the varnish. There might be something a bit off with the sample you have. Lion is brilliant at signposting framers to various and often arcane artists products. But if you want to go a bit deeper, its often best to buy from...

Re: Perfect Joins

Whilst agreeing with justintime about the glue left to cure for 24hr, I always leave the clamp on for the 24hr. The clamps are cheap so having several of them means you can leave the frames strapped up overnight. All my frames are raw wood based, so I secure the corners by cross pinning with long fr...

Re: Perfect Joins

An underpinner is great if you have a busy workshop and many frames to make and join. But an underpinner 'takes no prisoners'. Get even the slightest error in your cutting and the underpinner will amplify the mistake on the joints. So if you're not in a great hurry and you really really want the per...

Re: And ANOTHER BIG ONE -

Now that's interesting. Thanks for that. The customer drove down to near Liverpool and we both met at a motorway services. He had to have an overnight stay. The current plan is to build a crate and ship it on a pallet back to Scotland. 'Much more convenient. Have you ever driven from Aberystwyth to ...

Re: And ANOTHER BIG ONE -

Well, it came all the way down from Scotland, of all places.

The customer has it for a painting by the Scottish artist, James Paterson R.S.A.

The next problem is how to get it all the way back up there.
