Re: How to properly Float Mount?

1) Cut 3/16 (.47cm) thick foamcore 1/4 inch (.63 cm) smaller than the art itself. 2) Mount the foamcore centered on a mat (with what material? Just linen tape?) 3) Mount the artwork to the foamcore (with what material? Just linen tape?) I get the general way of measuring it out etc. or at least I t...

Re: How to properly Float Mount?

Hello and welcome the forum :handshake: Both methods are fine. As Prospero says, one is flat against the undermount (mat) and the other is raised or floating. You can substitute the foamboard in the second method for conservation board if you're unsure about the archival qualities of foamboard. The ...

A bit different

"Can you replace the broken glass in this tea tray?" "Sure, no problem" says me. When I get it back to my workshop I discover the glass is not just clear glass but reverse painted! :Slap: Anyway, some cans of Rust-Oleum spray paint, 3mm glass, frog tape, green baize and plenty of...

Re: How to get picture frame corners flush?

Are you gluing your frames first and then underpinning or don't you use an underpinner at all? If you do have an underpinner, then glue and pin at the same time. I glue oak frames using a Bessey band clamp (highly recommended) and occasionally will get a raised front surface but it is easily rectifi...

Re: Brown gummed paper tape

...I suspect that most are using self adhesive tapes these days, or am I wrong? Any comments? What is this self adhesive tape you speak of? :giggle: I've only ever used gummed tape for sealing the backs of frames. I use Arqadia's tape which I find very nice but I'd be interested in some thicker stu...

I see from your link that it's jumbo board you're after.... that's a pack of 125 sheets only (pallet) direct from Arqadia

Edit, my mistake you can get packs of 5 jumbo from Arqadia

Re: Arqadia Account

If you register on their website for an online account I don't think you can do that without an account first so as Steve says you'll have to pick up the phone! I have cash accounts (pro- forma) with Arqadia, Wessex and R&H etc.... you order and pay at the same time. FYI, Wessex stock Arqadia b...

Re: Backing board and gap.

Hi, I don't bother to make the back of the frame and back board flush but I can appreciate it can look neater to some eyes. Dead flush is not a good idea anyway, as you need a few mm spare to fire in your framer's points! Use a sharp knife to cut the corners of the tape and then fold down, see photo...

Re: Mount Cardboard

Platform, Sink or Hedgehog :D If it's window-mounted and you can cover the edges then a platform mount will work and is totally reversible. If the art is thick, as I suspect it is, then a sink mount will be better, also totally reversible. If it is to be float mounted with the edges visible then it'...

Re: Mount Cardboard

Yes, use some wet glue :D A good conservation glue (or even wheat starch paste if you fancy 8) ) will hold it well without the risk of it being crushed under rollers. Some weights will be needed while it dries such as heavy books used with some foam or similar. I always have a bottle of Evacon-R han...

Re: Selling pictures from books

My framer removed the mount and backing to show me it was a picture apparently taken from a glossy magazine :head: The back was covered in text! Hi Jules, If you do frame pictures on thin paper with text on the back, do you know about the trick of using a black or dark under-mount rather than a whi...

Re: Traditional framing in Uganda

This is a really smart way of joining a mitre with splines and glue. The spline are just the thickness of a saw kerf, all done by hand.

What an adventure pramsay13 :D I hope you can get a good internet connection and keep us up to date with your progress :D

Re: inner cardboard packaging protection or similar for prin

Fluted board is stiff but remains light. If you bought some ArtBak, which is a frame backing board, you could get 16 A4s from a sheet of size 915 x 1220 mm. Lion, Wessex, Simons and everyone else sells the stuff under various names and thicknesses and would work out at around 15p to 20p +vat per A4....

These two frames were a one off bespoke job for a regular customer who is always willing to pay for quality handmade products. They were supplied complete with the photos mounted and framed by me i.e. not just sold as an empty photo frame. I don't get asked for free standing frames that often and ha...
