Re: Which tape

I'm definitely slowly working towards everything being reversible. The things that were done with double sided tape when I started here would give people on here a heart attack!

PM sent to me? didn't get anything here...

Re: Which tape

Some valuable or irreplaceable items demand hand torn hinges stuck with starch paste. If should mention that this process needs to be practised well before using it in anger. You could actually damage the art if you don't do it right. Problem is, a lot of the people working here have quite varied l...

Which tape

I know this is better done without the self adhesive tape. I know, and one day I will start to phase in doing it properly, but... If you were going to use self adhesive tape to mount pictures to the undermount, is any self adhesive tape better than others? I've been using PH7-70, but wondered if the...

Re: Print stuck to MDF board!!!

Alas, The old trick of a customer............... Making their problem, your problem. The picture framer always loses. Yep. I wouldn't even be attempting it. I'd happily put the customer in touch with someone who could probably do it, but the cost would probably be more than a new print! The only wa...

Re: Glass cutter & Smoothing edges

I've never smoothed any glass edges. And I've cut a lot of glass. :D It's only really necessary if you are making clipframes where the edges are exposed. Who makes clipframes???  I'm always surprised how often I get asked to make clipframes. Not talking huge amounts, but way more than I...

Re: Framing Photographs

Are there advantages to dry mounting over wet mounting? I've always either hinged or used self-adhesive board/spray.

Re: Chinese pictures to frame

Well I did say that this wasn't with conservation in mind and he said it doesn't matter. After all it's his pictures and his choice. On the upside I have the moulding and the mount board in stock that he wants and at the end of the day am here to make a living so bobs yer uncle! Yep. I'll happily e...

Re: Flecks in Mount Board

Ken from F W Holroyd's was telling me about a mountboard which is made in a place which only does whites. Lion do it too from what I gather, the Value conservation and duo. Apparently "Duo has been tested widely by framers using hand and CMC cutters and all report that it is a little softer tha...

Re: Hand prints moulded in clear glass.

I've framed a few glass bits, none of them round unfortunately.

Roboframer's suggestions on this thread helped me a lot: http://theframersforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... sh#p116858

Good luck!

Re: Stock issues

The good thing is, any stock you then have sat there is written off already. If you get the chance to use it (you probably will, it builds up) then you've got a freebie! It's up there with the most satisfying framing moments when you find 4 offcuts of the right moulding which are just a bit bigger t...

Re: Stock issues

Wessex would deliver to me twice a week so you don't need stock. Stock 6 mouldings. Otherwise order in what you need once you have a commission. And when ordering moulding make sure that you charge your customers for full lengths - it's probably only two or three pounds extra on most orders. This i...

Re: Handheld glass cutter

We have a bit of a hall of fame going on with small cuts of glass. People get far too competitive about it here.

My record is about 3mm, from a 500mmish piece of glass. Mind you, that's with a keencut Excalibur, so probably a bit easier!

Re: Off-the-shelf frames

We never used to charge anything for fitting our mounts in to a customer's frame, but there have been a few times its taken longer than making a frame from scratch! Or the glass breaks and we end up replacing that. Going to start charging a set fee for it. In this case, I would probably be quite hon...
