Scanning of photos
As part of a much larger job I have been asked to have some copies made of some photographs I have in for reframing. The photos are colour 16x20 inches. No original negatives. Owner holds the copyright. I would like the digital images back as well as prints. (Although I could order these on line) Do...

Restretching Large Canvas
I have a large canvas in for restretching. Its 33x48 ie non standard size and in a box frame so the customer wanst to keep it the same size. The canvas is slack and needs retensioning. Problem is that it is on standard stretcher bars ie no corner wedges, and it is well stapled down and there is only...

Mount Decoration Machine
I was talking to someone today and they mentioed a mount decoration machine, I'm guessing something like a CMC but just for mount decoration. I didn't get any further information. Has anyone heard of such a thing? I think it acts like a sort of pen head only CMC.

Thought so. I probably need to think before I quote.

Cut Glass
I had a lady call this afternoon asking for a single sheet of picture glass cut to 14x14 inches. I said it would be about £7 and she said 'I'll think about it' and hung up. It made me wonder what others would charge for cutting a single piece of glass to size? It only takes a minute or two but I did...

Re: Dry mounting consent form
At the risk of starting another FATG bashing session (I am member BTW) I wonder if the Legal advice offered by the FATG can help with the wording? It seems the sort of thing that they could offer. I'll ask.

Big problem with Morso Blades
Hi, Ive been happily cutting away on the Morso for a year or so with no issues. The other day I got in some new obeche moulding which seemed particurly soft. I went to make up a chevron and low and behold I got the result you can see in the photo. Instead of a clean cut, which I normally get, the bl...

Re: Researching CMCs
oh yeah, I forgot about all that side of it as well, all the R&D and new designs and that test cutting, and timing, and more test cuts, and nested test cuts that swallows up more time and materials. Then someone copies it, to save themselves thinking at all or doing any work. And then one or tw...

Re: Researching CMCs
This (as usual) has been very informative and thanks for the honest advice. I see a CMC as a integral part of the bespoke business and not just a tool to 'get on line' with, in truth I am not in a position yet to service a serious online presence however I want to be ready when I am, so I see the CM...

Re: Beer mats
I would have thought that by float mounting you are going to have to stick something to the back and run the risk of damage, even using gummed tape might cause beer mats to tear if they ever need to be removed. Have you considered a multi-aperture mount with a sub-mount with holes the size of each b...

Re: Researching CMCs
Well the choice of CMC has been made, it’s just a matter of when and still a little bit of 'if'. Currently I'm in the fortunate position to have a well-paid but part time position that pays the bills and allows me to work on my framing about 50% of the time and would also cover the cost of leasing t...

Re: Narrow fillet
I use the B&Q strip wood to extend rebates by making up a simple insert that fits inside the rebate of the finised frame, sometimes I use a narrow mount to hide the insert or sometimes i just paint it. I find it better than using the Box Frame that is on the market. On large frame that need to b...

Deep section 'L' profiles
Happy Easter one and all! I'm looking for a dep section 'L' profile for box canvas frames. It needs to be 40mm deep, plenty around at less than that but I dont want the 40mm deep box canvases exposed above the rim of the frame. I cant seem to find any. Can anyone point me in the right direction plea...

Re: What would you have done?
I suspect most framers would have taken the job on and cuffed it as normal. 'its a learning opportunity' I hear them saying...and of course the customer may comback with some more so 'i'll be able to use up up the additional stock I had to order in' ( because of the large minimum purchases with most...

Re: Twice #*|!^
So far the worst mistake I have made is pricing up a job and quoting the customer only to find later that I had entered 127mm instead of 1127mm into the pricing prog. It was one of several jobs from the same customer so the dent in profit wasn't all that bad but I won't do it again....
