Re: Alternative solution for joining deep frames
I use these a lot, obviously on bare wood mouldings, but really useful when doing small frames where strap clamps are a pain.

Hi Keith
The letters were a security device, and relate to the position of the individual stamp on the printed sheet.
If you win your bid, you know where you can get it framed!

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!
Definitely had too much time on my hands this week, so I finally got around to framing a Penny Black stamp that was my pride and joy aged 11. (I have since replaced it in my collection with a decent example, but this one has huge sentimental value to me). As a framer and a stamp collector I have had...

Re: Fabric pieces
I make quite a few triangular frames. The first time I adjusted my Morso angle. Never again! It took ages, ended up with bad joins, and it took weeks for me to get the Morso exactly back to normal! I then started to use the disc sander. Cut on the Morso, and then adjust the angle with the sander. Jo...

Re: Framing complaint
Hi Gary Not sure I fully understand what has happened here. Did you produce the artwork itself, or just frame it? ie it's the Artist's work that has failed? Having said that, My advice is simple. If you had something to do with it, and there's a problem that you can fix, suck it up, and fix it so lo...

Hand Finising Course Thursday 30th March
Hi All I still have 2 places left on my next group hand-finishing course being held at my workshop (near Nottingham) on Thursday 30th March from 10am until 4pm. The cost is just £95 (no VAT) per person. This is an introductory level course, detailing the equipment and techniques involved in creating...

Re: What do you listen to when working?
I listen to Times radio to keep me up to date with politics and world affairs, but I do find that too much of that makes me feel depressed, so I usually only do an hour or two of that, then switch over to music. I like music that keeps me relaxed but upbeat. Particularly if I am hand-finishing. My c...

Re: very long narrow map
My first thought is have you price conditioned the customer? Do you have enough room to make something like that? You would need the woodworking skills to extend the moulding beyond 3m also. I would turn the job down based on the size of my workshop and the fact that I work alone, I suspect also tha...

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!
Hi Steven Thanks for the compliment. Process as follows 1 choose a textured mount and cut as normal 2 use 2 different acrylic colours and do 2 coats (this one was 2 similar shades of brown - this gives the finish more depth ) painted in such a way as to add some more texture, and dried with hot air ...

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!
This is one I did a few months ago. It’s a collection of Victorian and Edwardian calling cards that I picked up at an antique fair for £20. It hangs in my downstairs loo! It’s a cmc cut textured mount that has been painted (inc the bevels) with acrylic paint and then waxed with black patinating wax....

Re: Mexican tapestry sort of thing!
Hi Jim Totally understand the idea of working on a larger piece of board than the finished size so that it can be centralised more easily and then trimmed down - like you, we do that often. But, and purely for my own interest, can you just clarify why you would recommend cutting out an aperture bef...

Re: Mexican tapestry sort of thing!
Hi Kirsty Not sure if I have understood correctly, but I'm thinking you mean that the central part is fabric, and the 'lattice pattern' around the edge is some kind of paper. I'm also getting the impression that your client isn't wanting to spend a lot, and conservation is not main priority - but I'...

Get yourself some training! Far from being expensive, it will save you such a lot of money and wasted time trying to re-invent the wheel.

Re: Posters with no mount
Let's be real about this. Explain to the customer what will happen if items are framed this way, and how the job should be done. But then it is up to the customer to decide. We earn a living framing stuff, so frame it. I have done 2 prints today, with normal float glass, and no mounts or spacers. Th...

Re: The Story of a Picture Frame
That's a very interesting post, and a beautiful finished frame. Do you find that most of your customers are in London? Although I mainly make contemporary frames, and don't usually do any gilding. Most of my output is hand-finished, catering for very deep rebates, or very wide profiles not available...

Re: Framing for critique
I do like weighting the mount, but if the customer notices, it's too much. Typically, something of that size might have 5mm extra on the bottom. I do it to avoid the situation where it looks (optical illusion) like the bottom border is thinner, certainly not to make the bottom border look wider. As ...
