Re: Probably should have said a big fat NO

And here’s the artist holding the finished piece . . . Made from real tarantulas!

Apparently this one is destined for the RA later this year.

I’ve had orders for several more frames already, so I might have unwittingly found myself a niche!

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!

Usually we all post jobs that we are happy to admit to. I was thinking that in order to balance things out a bit, I would post a job I did this week where the customer was not prepared to pay to have the job done in any of the ways I suggested because it was going to cost him £300+. Eventually we go...

Re: Online Framing Tutorials

There are some superb mount cutting videos, featuring David Wilkie that you can find at keencut.com . These are some of the best you will find. There is also a set of videos from Rinaldin by Mal Reynolds called 'Conservation Framing 'that you can find on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISPGk...

Re: Getting re-going

I am a low volume, working from home framer, although I do have a customer base built up over many years on the High St, but 40 miles away from where I now live. I use mainly Centrado, (but the same strategy would work with Wessex). My approach is to sell mainly AR70 glass, so by ordering that one o...

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!

To kick this off . . .

I’ve been working on prototypes of a range of specimen frames. They are designed to be front-loading so that collectors can add their own items easily.

Re: very thin wood wedges

Failing that, I could laser cut them for you in 2mm or 2.5mm MDF. I would need the exact shape you want. for 200 it would be £30 + postage

Re: very thin wood wedges

First result on google search brings this up. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/294781734785?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338365712&toolid=20006&customid=EB92173544& It doesn't quote the thickness, but would be worth contacting the seller, to see if they can do 2mm.

Re: Underpinner advice please?

I would definitetely use my Hoffmann to join oak frames, in fact I often use it on moulding that would join perfectly well on my (large pneumatic) underpinner. But the Hoffmann is an expensive bit of kit, even second-hand. Bearing in mind that you plan to use the same moulding all the time, and that...

Re: Underpinner advice please?

Hi Steve Welcome to the forum No manual underpinner is ideal for oak, but it is perfectly possible to get a good join with time and practice. I suppose it depends on how many frames you are planning to make. If your oak has a square profile it will give you less difficulty, as it is easier to get su...

I really want to have an opinion on this, but I got as far as 'OpenAI’s DALL•E 2' and realised I am completely out of my depth!

There have always been, and probably always will be far more 'lurkers' than posters on the forum. But in the last couple of years an overwhelming quantity of repetitive twaddle drowning out useful content has led to regular posters turning off, and new members getting a completely skewed impression ...

Re: Police Memorabilia Frame

I’m happy with ‘random’ angles. I think over regulation is a bad thing in many areas!

Here’s a similar thing I did a year or 2 ago. I spent ages trying to work out a logical method, failed, so just put them in. Customer was thrilled.

As to the contents . . . Don’t ask!

Re: Mount chevron display

It used to be a standard thing with a set of chevrons (years ago). Then all the suppliers started to offer self-assembly cardboard ones that didn't last 5 minutes. Now they don't offer anything! It's called progress . . .

I have also made my own, not very complicated, and it has lasted for years.

Re: Probably should have said a big fat NO

I started with 2 sheets of 3mm MDF, and used my laser cutter to cut out the heart shape cut into sections (the laser cutter is only 600x300). 2 wider layers for the front section and 22 layers that were thinner in 2 different cut patterns so the joins were overlapped on alternate layers. I then glue...

Probably should have said a big fat NO

Regular customer: Hey Jim, could you make me a heart shaped frame? Me: (Should have been NO!) What size? Customer: 550x405 Me: That would be doable but expensive Customer: Oh and it needs to have 50mm depth Me: When do you need it? Well it is now done, and even though it was expensive it still wasn’...

Re: Hello from Yorkshire

Hi Nick, and welcome to the forum. There are plenty of suppliers to choose from, all with mind boggling ranges of products. My advice would be to choose one main supplier, so that you have a sporting chance of not paying delivery fees by having big enough orders. It is all too easy to get carried aw...

Re: Mounting a beret

I would sew it to the mountboard. I have one of those guns that fires plastic tags, I normally put a couple of those in to hold it in place, then using a tool which is basically a thick needle with a wooden handle to make the holes in the mountboard, I then sew it on, then cut off the plastic tags.

Another vote for Munken. It's good value, cuts well, rarely any specks, and it takes paint very well.
