Hi Not your Avarage Framer, I used to use Crackle glaze many years ago ( a two bottle system), I used to dry mount or wet mount or even canvas-bond and heatseal a suitable old looking print like a copy of an old Dutch master, then add the glaze which came in one bottle and then the other bottle a so...

Cleaning of oil paintings
Hi Not your average framer, I agree with your comments I to take on small restoration and repairs of items for insurance companies and private customers. Your proforma is excellent, Your points about specifying your restorative actions, risk assessment, limiting your liablity and quoting a price sho...

Whoops I slipped
After Leaving School in 1975 and helping and two framers locally for pocket money, I started my first framing job in Norwich at studio 69 Elm Hill, Three months of filling nail holes and finishing off. I was just putting single D-rings onto the back of a framed oil painting with the old red style st...

Re: Another newbie.
Hi. I`ve only recently started framing part time so I`m as ignorant as they come. I am a supply teacher for most of the week. I was a full time primary school teacher but found I needed to broaden my interests to stay sane. Anyway I`ve set up a workshop in the front room and have reached the stage ...

Re: System 4000 vs. Excalibur 5000
Hi folks - I'm looking to round out my framing workshop with one of these (or some other brand - these are the only two I've had recommended). What are the major differences? I've been warned off the Excalibur by one or two people saying it's not as good as the older System 4000. Never having used ...

Re: Best tip gleaned from forum!
I do a tremendous amount of hand finishing of natural mouldings and today I had whitened a 10cm wide length and then washed a patina of blue-grey into the grain. In the past I used to use a rag dipped in a matt sealer and a load of elbow grease rubbing off the excess to leave a beautiful pearly whi...

Sorry Prospero, unfortunately the forum will not let you upload an avatar image stored locally on your computer. The only way to do it is to have the image somewhere on the Internet and then refer to it by its web address. Fionnuala, there are lots of ways, such as photobucket, to get your avatar i...

Re: Glue ?
I have only encountered a few occasions when I have had to glue the moulding as well as underpin. This was necessary for a very thin moulding and and also on a deep rebate when framing a football shirt. I found the wedges would not close the front of the moulding. Can I ask if other people uses glu...
