Re: Bright red flat moulding 50mm or wider

You can often spray a generic flat moulding that has the usual 'plasticy' finish with a rattle can of car spray paint. I used to spray the good old ½" black cushion with paint cans from Halfords and it stuck a treat and was very durable. The paint formulations may have changed over the years bu...

Re: How is this moulding effect achieved?

There are many ways according to how extreme the 'grooving' you want. A wire brush on a power drill along the grain gives a good rough effect. Pine works better than obeche as it has soft parts between the 'rays' which wear quicker. For deeper grooves, and sanding drum on a Dremel used at 45º works ...

Re: Best product or method to fill holes on bare frame ?

Try Brummer Stopping. :D I find it blends into the natural wood very well.
Antique Pine matches most pale woods.

I happened to be searching the Simons site the other day and spotted this one which I thought was long gone.
It might be close to what you're looking for...

Re: Ornate gold moulding for canvas minatures

This is why I do 99% hand finished mouldings nowadays. :D I can make anything given time and budget. On the face of it you just need to make a basic tray frame and put an ornate moulding around it, but finding a suitable 'off the shelf' ornate moulding is not easy. Could you give a more detailed des...

Re: Sealing packages

I've used a white acid free self adhesive like Nitto tape/P70 for a few years on most work, saving the acid free gummed tape for level 1 work but recently started to use the gummed tape for everything. Masking tape is banned in my work space, I can't stand the stuff. If you've ever had to open up a...

Re: Sealing packages

I've been doing this for years. It doesn't take long and once done you know no bits can get in. It's much easier the handle one unified object than faff about loading separate glass/mount/back into a frame. It's when you try to do this that bits get sucked in. Also when in the frame it's an excellen...

Re: Question about Keen cut Excalibur 5000 board cutter

The legs can be extended yes and you could alway seat the legs in wooden blocks for extra height. But raising the machine would make reaching the upper two-wheel cutter block very difficult unless you are very tall or have very long arms. Mine sits nicely against an 8½' wall. Raising the horizontal ...

Re: Hedgehog method

It should be mentioned that the float method of mounting is not really the ideal way to mount paper-borne artwork. Especially large stuff. It may stay reasonably flat or it may go wavy an curl away from the mounting board at the edges. That's something that can't really be 'cured'. The traditional w...

Re: Making Tax Digital

I've just had a nice lady ring to try and resolve the issue. :D She says it likely an issue with their software. We went through setting up a new online VAT account, but that one wouldn't let me sign in as well. At least I know it's not my fault. Anyhow, she said I could make the payment via ...

Making Tax Digital

OK, here a funny kettle of fish.......... A while ago it was decided that VAT returns had to be submitted digitally, as members are no doubt aware. So I get it all set up on my PC and try to brush-up on the intricacies of Excel. Previously I wrote all my accounts in a book of real paper with a real ...

Stack them neatly in cardboard boxes.

Put the boxes in a big shed for 30 years and then burn them.

Re: underpinner identification help, please

A major shortcoming with these machines is the top pressure pad. It can dent certain mouldings. On my Euro model I made a triangle from ½" thick wood and faced it with cork (polyurethane is better if you can get a bit). This is to spread the load and is placed over the corner when joining. To s...

Re: underpinner identification help, please

The head mechanism looks very like the old Euro range, so I suspect it's a derivative of one of those.
I do have some experience of them and they are basic but tough machines so I may be able to help with
any probs.

I don't use much Oak, but I can heartily endorse Rose & Hollis. If you speak to them nicely they would probably
pick out all matching bits. :D

* You might want to try Ash for light finishes. It's a tad easier to work with and tends to be more consistent.

Re: Filling grain on obeche

I use a lot of 'No Nonsense' fine surface wood filler from Screwfix. Basically I apply it with a knackered old brush. Dip the brush in water and scrub it into filler then paint it on. Not too wet and not to dry. Then take a cloth and rub it in, taking off the excess. When it's dry, sand off any nobb...

First of all I would try re-seating the blades.

They should be snug where they meet and equal height.
