Re: Village Hall stall

I've booked a stall at a craft fair in Coniston next month. I'm going to show lots of examples of hand finshed frames and have lots of bare wood samples, a few rags and tins of various waxes to demonstrate how I work. Visitors always like to see a craftsperson at work  at these sort of fairs.....

Re: Wanted: mitre trimmer

If you do find a second hand trimmer, you want to make sure the blades are sharp. I don’t know if they can be sharpened as you can with a Morso, but new blades are about £60 http://www.diyframing.com/store_viewItem.cfm/ItemID/95 Whether you go for new or second hand, do make sure the trimmer is well...

Re: To pin or not to pin

Hello Kirsty, I would say it depends on what type of wood you want to work with. If you’re joining obeche or pine, both being softwood, then you can certainly use the hand pinners with good results. Also, if you keep to basic flat profiles, it will be much easier to use the hand joiners. In the past...

Re: I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

Lots of interesting stuff here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_summer I like the sound of 'a Tiger in Autumn' as they say in China. Guess it's okay for me to say Indian Summer as my Great Grandmother was Indian, so that makes me an eighth Indian! And I know nothing about being PC :xcompu...

Re: I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

Very interesting to see other folk's workshops. I don't think Framemaker's large frames would fit in my workshop! :giggle: Thanks for asking Steve about the flood damage, thankfully there wasn't any. It just came in along the floor. The carpeted area where I keep customer’s work and finished jobs is...

I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

Steve N asked to see some pictures of my workshop so here they are. Building benches on uneven floors and squeezing equipment into old calving pens was a real challenge! Anybody else willing to share photos of their workshop? :D Morso.jpg Finishing.jpg Rayrigg Studios.jpg Etching.jpg Under Pinner.jp...

Re: Simple hand finish.

That's interesting about the wavy line optical illusion. It was noticeable on the small frame and I had to convince myself with a set square that it was ok. It really did make one corner look way out! The customer didn’t notice! :giggle: The moulding is ash PW91 from Wessex. Yes, I did build that be...

Simple hand finish.

Just though I would show an example of a simple hand finish that is really easy to do but produces a big change in the appearance of the wood. I’ve used ash and rubbed Liberon black patinating wax into it with fine wire wool and then rubbed off as much as I can with a cloth and clear wax. It also gi...

Re: URGENT- Please check this site- Re Copyright

This seems to me to be more than just breach of copyright regarding your images, they’re using examples of your framing service as examples of their framing service!! That’s just unbelievable.

Re: Music Licence

I read a letter in the August Art Business Today about the PPL & PRS and decided not to worry about it. Guess what arrived in the post at my workshop today?.... a letter from the PRS! :( From the PRS website: "If you are the only person working on a premises (lone worker), and music is not ...

Re: Hand finished corner samples.

That's good thinking to refer to them as examples and not samples, will have to remember that. I’ve found that customers really like the grain patterns on oak and ash, particularly with black patina wax, but often the finished frame is so different from my sample, but that is part of the appe...

Hand finished corner samples.

I was wondering how you sell your hand finishes to your customers?

Do they choose from hand finished corner samples that you have on display or do they discuss what they want and then you either produce a sample or go ahead and make the frame?

:D

Re: Tapered box fittings.

The box is made of backing board. I’ve yet to get to grips with box frames, so not sure what you mean.

When you say failure, what do you mean? Got me worried now

Tapered box fittings.

I’ve used the tapered box design a couple of times to frame objects, but I’m not sure if my method of securing the box to the moulding is the best way. I’ve followed the video on YouTube by Dave Woolass and he suggests silicone rubber. Wasn’t sure where to get some silicone rubber so I’ve been using...

Re: Gummed tape and Tru Vue glass.

Think I'll order some P90 tape as per all your advice, thanks :D

Wish I'd thought of running a blade round the tape instead of trying to pull it off  sometimes the obvious just stares straight at you and for some reason you ignore it (well I do anyway) :Slap:

Re: Gummed tape and Tru Vue glass.

Thanks Prospero and Roboframer. I like the idea of my working methods being functional but was just a bit concerned about conservation work needing to be reversible. Removing sticky tape from the picture package won’t damage the artwork I know, but it did make a mess of the undermount. From what you...

Gummed tape and Tru Vue glass.

Hello all, I’ve been running a small picture framing business for just over a year now from my workshop in the Lake District. I had some excellent training from Mary Evans last year and have developed a keen interest in conservation and hand finished frames. I seal all my picture packages with tape ...
