Re: Joining mouldings cut on side
I used to do a joint similar to this but many years ago. It involved driving long wedges up into the back of the rebate, perhaps two spaced across the face, then using a pin punch to complete the insertion of the wedge into the moulding. I discovered that pin punches were counter sunk, having bought...

Re: Pearlescent powder
I used to use these types of pigments and got some pretty fantastic results. I have been retired for more that 10 years and I did not use them for the types of end use you are seeking advice on, but I suggest trying some experiments may give some useful and interesting effects. When I started to use...

Re: Handgun
Nice work, Having spent a few years making displays for commercial premises, I cased a few antique weapons. On one occasion a very good customer, who bought hundreds of displays a year asked me to do a special for a friend. It turned out to be a very nice quality pepperpot pistol, and the client gav...

Re: Framing a 'lop sided' block canvas
The slip option seemed the most obvious and best choice to me and after some reflection, I realised that the OP has made another frame that the canvas does not fit in. Given the nature of the moulding shown it seems possible, with access to a good bench saw, to rip off the face of the redundant moul...

Re: Bench coverings
I used to use Flotex for glass cutting and handling. I do not know what the pros and cons of a busy picture framing workflow might be but in the fabrication of glass cases it actively allowed for quicker procedures. Just before I retired I demonstrated a method of case making to a successful framing...

Re: Poppy Display Cases
Where the display cases are shown in the other topic, so that the comparison is more direct, the boxed display does not seem to have so much light on the leaves. This may be a factor that the customer is looking for. With only one source of style, putting an object that has so much of the poignancy ...

Re: Another local business bites the dust!
An interesting apprenticeship, in some ways snap, the days before buyers premium, I think the margins for buying, improving or restoring and reselling was better. Household sales in the 60's and 70's saw more dilapidated quality, which could be restored and had good margins to be made. The learning ...

Re: Another local business bites the dust!
Sad news for you. Auction houses taught me that I had a product to buy and sell. In fact it was through this trade that I discovered the scale and depth of 3D framing. Sadly, due to an untimely and tragic death, I lost a valuable friend in the auctioneering profession, who believed that 3D framing c...

Re: Anybody framed a shotgun before?
I framed quite a number of guns and a number were shotguns, but I always used a picture frame case and a fabric lined back and therefore it was possible to make the supports more visible and lined in green baize as was the backboard. With CMC today the tendency is towards box framing and a lot of mo...

Hi and welcome.
I have an interest in the framing of non-durable 3D art forms. Comparing methods and discussing work procedures that can open up new methods, interested in projects that might fall into these categories.
Liked the look of your workshop.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
Does it depend on the source of the commission? Many framers are immediately focused on conservation, when presented with a subject that has a possible long term values, but the primary motive for the commission may be display. With artifacts or objects the primary cause for presentation may be more...

Re: A quote for all serious framers
As a lone voice that thinks that 'the case'/'transparent cover' is a form of framing, this saying becomes quite interesting when tested against those forms of art that would or could fall into the case makers sphere.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
Had a bit of a stab at making a 3D virtual model of a ceramic poppy. If the diameter is close to 3 1/2 inches, then this to scale for a backboard that will fit in a morso. It made a very quick way of framing cricket bats, which combined with D or cover mouldings from DIY suppliers, makes a 'quick to...

Re: photos needed for new website
Didn't trouble the compilers of Pete Bingham's Agony book, I seem to remember contributing to that. Probably added to the myth that framer's know more about case making than they actually do.

Re: Weirdest framing request
This one came to mind, when I read this post, over 30 years ago, pub owners were investing in the decor of their establishments and a young taxidermist got a commission to provide a Gryphon or Griffin for a hostelry of that name. He acquired a large grey cat (dead) from a local vets and a buzzard fr...

Re: Tower of London Poppy to frame, anyone else ?
Why talk the customer out of what she/he wants. Of the top of my head I can think of 6 ways to make the style of case wanted. Front glass only FGO's are not needed with ceramics, as there is no risk of UV damage, mirror back to give extra light will on confuse the simplicity of the object. I taught ...

They look like igneous rock samples, if so hardly any likelyhood of acetic acid having any effect on them. Quartz, or quartzite and other igneous rocks will have a hardness greater than glass, if they will scratch glass then silicone is probably a safe bet and a secure a fixing.

I emailed the previous poster through their website and have had no reply, with a hope of learning about the thinner form of lead tape shown in the image I posted, that was a week ago. I do know a particular artist, who is experimenting with a style of 3D framing, where this product, if still availa...

Re: Construction method of Glass box / case ?
Ah! I stand corrected but not entirely convinced. Some years ago I had the opportunity to discuss with a member of the General Framing Council, whose experience and business spanned several generations, his reasons for the framer's professional body not having a policy or protocols for transparent c...

Re: Construction method of Glass box / case ?
I might not have posted this, but for a chance meeting with an old school mate yesterday. My old school friend is a professional artist and runs residential teaching courses on painting in mid-Wales at his home, where I stumbled on him exploring an out of the way footpath. During a guided tour of ga...
