Thanks Áine,

But it was a team effort. Improving someone elses idea, can't happen if they didn't share the idea with you to start with.

This is the forum where we all work together and we all learn together!

Re: Wall racking

I have to say the carpentry road sounds a bit dodgy for my abilities. I can easily understand you thinking that and originally I only did it that way because at the time I could not afford anything else. However 2" x 2" timber is far stronger than most people realise. The construct...

My thanks to all, I have adapted John's method and will make the Z section from a length of Rabbetspace cut to be a good fit between the two ends of the broach bar. The court mounted medals will then hang on the Rabbetspace and as an added security feature I have ordered some very small button magne...

Ooooooooh! Now that I r-e-a-l-l-y like, Pat! Yes, me too! Where I was trained, they had a packing bench with a very nice idea incorporated into it. Under the front edge of the bench were two D-rings with a length of picture wire between them. A split ring (key ring) was able to slide along this wir...

Thanks John, That's triggered a few thoughts at this end and I think has set me on a good course. I'm fortunate in having several boxes of bits and bobs from an old well established framers in Totnes who sold me the entire contents of their workshop, when the owner retired at a very ripe old age. I ...

The arms are 25mm squared steel... 400mm long. Welded to a flat stock bar 100mm wide. Hi John, You may remember mine, the arms and the uprights are made of 2" x 2" planed all round pine with short 45 degree 2" x 2" supports under the back of each arm. The arms, (18" long), ...

Hi John (Merlin), You've just given me a great idea. My Morso also has moulding racks on the wall behind, but mine don't come down below head height. So all I have to do is saw a couple of feet off of the length of the bench, move the Morso away from the wall and add more racking. Thanks for the ins...

I've been thinking about doing that or getting one of those heavy duty vacuum cleaners to clear out behind the Morso. Don't ask me how, but my wife has developed the technique of raking the bits out through the slots at the front using a scrap piece of moulding. I think I prefer the vacuum cleaner m...

Thanks John,

I've already been there, a really helpful thread too! Incidentally the back of the court mounts is covered with the medal ribbons, which are well stuck in place so I figure that the velcro 1" wide tape should remain secure.

Hi Áine and David, They are court mounted in three rows on long broach bars. Each row is on a separate broach bar. It's a lot of medals! I am planning on sticking the suede mountboard onto Arqadia 400 series solid core which is a very dense and stiff mountboard and then stapling through the velcro a...

Attaching / stapling velcro to mountmoard.

I'm currently framing a large array of medals for a customer who wants to be able to wear them from time to time. They are to be displayed against suede mountboard. So I was planning on fixing them in place with velro so they can easily be removed and replaced. The unreliability of velro sticking to...

Even the more expensive paints are still very cheap to use compared to the cost of the moulding. Cheap paints don't always last very well. You might not see your work a few years later, but if it looks bad, what about the effect on your reputation. I like Farrow & ball too, but my real favorite ...

Strange as it may seem, I didn't catch on to that until I saw Bill's interpretation. Of course, Bill is at a disadvantage being in the USA, because he's unlikely to know who Arthur Daily is!

Bill, is this what I would refer to as PVA, or another adhesive?[/quote]

I think you will find that it is a starch based glue. There are lots recipes for white glue on the web.

Hi Prospero, I was thinking the same, but I'm not convinced that it is a particularly good choice. You used to be able to buy Gloy gum in big bottles, but Pritt-Stick bought them out and put a stop to that. Years ago framers bought up tea chests from the tea companies to use the plywood for backing ...

Glue for sealing back of frames

I am about to order some rolls of black paper to use for sealing the backs of frames. It will be cut into strips to use in place of the usual gummed paper tape. So far I've drawn a blank on getting the ideal glue / gum and I don't want to use PVA. Any ideas please.
Thanks in anticipation.
