Re: What will the GCF qualification get me?

"because these professional bodies have systems in place to deal with them." They are only dealt with if they're caught and because the are generally breaking the law not because they are not capable or inferior :!: They are still 1000's of bad "professionals" who are only in the...

Re: What will the GCF qualification get me?

Hi Emma, I've sat back and watched this thread with interest as well. I only started framing 18 months ago, probably not the best time to start! I did a few days working with a friend who has his own business and then a weeks training with a GCF on an FATG accredited course. Shows how easy it is to ...

Re: Backboard Fixing

I'd use either Fletcher flexible points, not sure how many times you could "flex" them but quite a few times, or frame turnbuttons maybe with kidney plates on the bottom two corners. See Lion pages 99 / 100 Only thing with the turn buttons is you would have to pack out the frame package so...

Re: snow report

Alvechurch, 10 miles SW of Birmingham It's been snowing here since about 6:00 this morning and we have about 8" / 20cm and -2.5 C, but it is the first real snow we've had this winter :o I think I'll be giving early doors a miss  Usually cycle to the local pub, it's just under 3 miles, bu...

Steve and John,

Did you PM or email Jay?

As he states he can't read any posts he presumably won't have seen yours!

Am I right in saying it's best mounted onto a black backing board so that any printing on the reverse side doesn't show through?

Re: Typical Turnaround ?

Hi Adam, I also give a two week turn around, any more and I think people may consider going elsewhere and I wouldn't want to wait 3 weeks or more. I aim to have items ready in less than the two weeks but this allows me to order in mouldings as needed, I keep very little stock. I too prefer customers...

Framing with slips

I’ve been asked to frame 2 oil painting canvases ~50cm x 50cm; not of great value, bought in Vietnam. Customer has requested that they are glazed so they need a slip between the canvas and the glass but the slip, 45mm wide, can only cover 5mm of the edge of the painting. My question is if I put the ...

Re: Velvet backing for showing off medals

May I ask how you fix the medals into/onto the mounts? Thanks P The ribbons are put through slits in the bottom mount and I then run a strip of mountboard through them (on the back just to secure). You should have 49mm (I think) of ribbon showing and the medals should be displayed in the correct or...

Re: Velvet backing for showing off medals

I use Arqadia Suedette for medals all the time, good range of colours for the different forces / regiments and no messing with adhesives and cuts well. I woulds post a photo but I can't get it to resize, DOH, but if you look at my website you'll see a couple of examples that use Suedette. Paul Frame...

Re: more mountboard query

Certainly the Nielsen Artcare cuts really easily but a bit more expensive than Arqadia or Colourmount. Mikey, have tried Arqadia Onyx rather than Black it cuts the same but the Onyx have a sheen / gloss to it rather than the rather flat / dull finish on the Black. I use Onyx all the time now and whe...

Re: Dilemma with Pricing!

Unfortunately delivery charges are a fact of life for my business and I just factor them into the price charged to the customers, I only order what I need plus a scrap / wastage factor. I quote a two week turnaround, but usually have the finished frame ready before that, I order on a weekly basis so...

Re: frame going in an unusual spot

For a large quite valuable print that was going above the kitchen sink, yes really! I used Correx Fluted Polyrprop (page 45 Lions) and aluminum frame sealing tape (Lions page 74). I used the ali tape to seal the frame package, backing, print, mount, glass and then used the same tape in the frame reb...

Hopefully I've already reserved my place for the Ogilvie Vaile workshop in January :D

Conservators / Restorers

I've got two seperate customers that both need some conservation/restoration work doing before we even consider any framing work; 1. Two oil painting portraits, circa 1952, I'm pretty sure they have not been varnished. Both have significant nicotine staining and need a good cleaning, maybe some ligh...
