Re: Another 2 hand finished frames with photos of various stages.

Very nice job, congratulations  I am not so sure about still seeing the grain after all that gesso but I agree it looks interesting. I also agree that if you are going to hand finish all your frames then you don't need an underpinner. You would not go far wrong using a Stanley 400 vise (Americ...

Re: How is this done?

Peter, thanks for that :D It was the process of reproducing the pictures on canvas that interested me and the low cost. I have had a quick look online and know a little more now but I would appreciate more information perhaps from a forum member who offers this service or from someone who has used a...

How is this done?

A programme on the TV recently showed the star "rescue" two naff pictures from the recycling centre skip with the intention to upcycle and add value. The pictures were photographed and sent somewhere and then returned as prints on canvas. I noticed the cost of 12 prints was £60. I am intri...

Hello Ady and welcome to the FF :D

I can't recommend any courses myself but I'm sure others will be along who can.

Re: Chop service and underpinner

It's good to read you have "more work on my hands than I know how to make hours in the week for" :D When I found myself in this situation, many many years ago, I invested in a pneumatic Cassese. These machines were new to the market then and very expensive. At the time it was a difficult d...

Re: Chop service and underpinner

On this occasion I concur with Marks every word :D In the past Mark has also said "buy cheap buy twice" so consider that when purchasing your underpinner. As regards Wessex and a chop service I was informed at their last Road show they are not going to continue that :( Best of luck whateve...

Re: octagonal frame

When I purchased my very first Morso (£150) I made a few octagonal frames from a scooped pine moulding, as pine was all the go back in the mid 70's thanks to Habitat and Mr Conran :giggle: I even managed to sell a couple as framed mirrors. I found the moulding easy to join with a home made tournique...

Re: Second attempt at hand finishing a frame...

When joining flat mouldings I rely on my finger tips as much as my eyes :giggle:

I am having great success with a flat black moulding at the moment so-much-so I don't need to use a black marker pen for the edges. :D

Re: Second attempt at hand finishing a frame...

As prospero said " sand the mitres to blend them in" and try a small amount of wood glue in the open mitre to mix with the saw dust as you sand.

As for "not going to post EVERY frame you finish" I say, "keep them coming"

Hello Megan and welcome to the FF :D It's good to read you have attended a framing course. In my opinion that's the best way to start. As regards the mat/mount cutter I do not have any experience using a Logan 650 but I am sure someone will be along who has. Good luck with your new venture. Peter.

Re: My first hand finished frame!

If you decide to persevere with shellac remember to dilute it with meths uo to 50%. I find it is then not too tacky or shinny and the drying process is speeded up.

Also, the brush used will effect the end result.

Peter.

ps a very nice first result btw :D

Re: Shellac

On a small project such as a picture frame I always use a brush. If it was a French polishing project I would use a pad as Mark suggests. I cut/dilute the shellac with meths. Recently I have purchased a couple of "one stroke" brushes strongly recommended on here, as yet I have not used the...

I love the way my workshop smells. It's a combination of germylene, wintergreen and old spice :D but it must be too warm as the customers always leave the door open :?

Woolly pully sleeves. I like mine down but, I am a frequent hand washer and as a consequence my sleeves get wet :x and so uncomfortable. When painting/staining etc I have a box of those cheap disposable surgical gloves. If it's not to cold my solution is to wear a sleeveless wooly jumper under my pi...

That's a very nice first attempt and to achieve that finish with minimum faff is impressive. I would take my hat off - if I wore one
