Re: Making mitred splines for a new frame

I would love to know the exact process used in the 19th century to make these frame joints... the first video I posted is the only source I can find showing this method for frames, lots of info out there on making sliding dovetails for furniture but not frames. A video on using a router and router t...

Re: Making mitred splines for a new frame

I don't know Junglewalker if my example was done by hand or router, the frame is around 1900. I don't see why (with enough experience and practice) you could not get very good looking, straight, and precise joints by hand. Most antique frames will have opened up a little, such as the examples below,...

Re: Making mitred splines for a new frame

These are called sliding dovetails, mitre splines, tapered splines, and mitre keys. Common on antique frames, particularly from France and other European countries.

R&H do a few finished gilt slips, can't they email you their finished mouldings catalogue?

Re: Flattening Bowed painted wooden panels

Large panels or boards should really have a backing cradle or brace fitted before priming and painting to reduce bowing. I have heard of artists painting the back to balance out the bowing, no idea how successful this is in practice...

Re: Moulding ID

I think this is a Simons moulding, they did it in 3 sizes (approx 1",2",3" wide) but no idea if they still do them.

The smaller R&H version is A271 - about 49mm wide and looks identical to your sample

I agree with NYAF about checking/changing the main spring. You can get replacements from Lion (probably other suppliers as well), I have replaced quite a few over the years.

Looks like an old Simons moulding, can't see it in the latest catalogue (only had a quick look through!)

Re: Newbie Oil Gilding Advice

As mentioned above acrylic size will stay tacky and soft indefinitely... so you will never be able to distress it like oil based size. Outer frame looks to me as you observe, gesso, black bole, oil size - hand made and not a factory finish. I think the small gold areas is the easiest thing to match,...

Re: Gilding - what do I need to get going?

My first gilding books were MacTaggart's 'Practical Gilding', and 'An Introduction to Water Gilding' by Horowitz and Tilmont. Both excellent introductions and guides as mentioned in earlier posts by the experts. My thought when I started learning gilding was; if only there was online video resource ...

Re: Web site creation software

It sounds like you have lots on at the moment and there are more immediate things to deal with, but it sounds like you have a good plan on how to structure things for the future. I am glad you mentioned the name 'Map Registrations' as I've heard of them before, sorry but I believe they are a cold ca...

Re: Web site creation software

Mentioned in the other topic about updating my own almost obsolete website, and started on my new site this afternoon, it's intended to be minimal with just the basics. I used 123reg which to be honest does not seem the most user friendly interface, and would suggest trying one of the other provider...

Re: Canvas slips and backing boards.

Prospero and NYAF, I think this knobbly and distressed frame was made around the 70's, it's certainly a bit unusual! I can see why the style did not catch on and become a classic, but still admire the framer who tries different ideas!

Re: Canvas slips and backing boards.

I think there is still a demand for these in some areas of the picture framing market. I've had three pics through the workshop this week that already had silk/fabric mounts or slips and they all looked very good. Still a demand for linen frame slips round here, also silk slips, mounts, and backings...

Re: Web site creation software

Totally agree with James (and everyone else), forget about making your own website, just go to wordpress, wix, 123reg, weebly, even blogger and you will have a site up in a few hours.
