Re: HF newb

That looks like, it might not be of course, something I've done on a number of occasions i.e. Paint on a thinish layer of black and immediately wipe it off. It leaves a stain rather than a coat of paint. Wax and buff. Bingo! Tried this and it looks almost identical! Just a bit more brown than the o...

Re: 5 piece canvas art anyone ?

Heh, easy there fella ! the customer was very pleased with them  You can't be too precise with these things, unless you're doing these things day in day out, then you could probably get down to 1mm overlap but that was my best shot  I hope my comment was read as playfully as it written....

Re: Damaging glass Excalibur 5000

Yeah, what Jerome said.

A lot of the guys here have the same problem at first, just takes practice.

I keep a clean paintbrush beside it to clear the bottom bit of any little chips or shards of glass. This seems to help, keeps the surface good and slidey.

Re: 5 piece canvas art anyone ?

I always just use stretcher mouldings for this kind of thing. These ones to be precise https://www.ashworthandthompson.co.uk/mouldings/type/stretcher/2040-pine.html I only worry about proper stretcher bars for paintings etc. Apart from anything else, it keeps the cost down for the customer - especia...

Just got mine in today - has my name on the contact section rather than above the address.

Also has a lion bar.

Re: Canvas Streching

First of all you don't need pliers. They are for stretching blank canvases. Use keyed bars if possible. The slotted stuff that you cut to size is tricky to use. If you use the type that you join 'rigid' it may be alright but if the canvas sags (and it can) you have no means to re-tension it. It's n...

Re: Lion deliveries - a warning

Not often I get to be one of the young ones, so I'm going to stick with it for a bit! In practical terms, I get it. It must be a total PITA having to package stuff up for a few quid. Also, like I said before, I've rarely ordered under £100 at a time from Lion. At the same time though, surely the mar...

Re: Lion deliveries - a warning

I'd be quite happy if we ever ordered less than £50 worth from them at a time.

If you're paying the delivery, I think I minimum order is a bit cheeky.

Re: Best quality strap clamps

We use one of these. https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/7777/Inglet-Steel-Band-Frame-Clamp-A--5m It works well. It was in the workshop when I started, so can't say if the price difference between this and the one vintage frames posted is justified. Pretty sure I wouldn't have bought the pricey one if it wa...

Meant to post a photo with the last one...

This is what I need it to look like, but genuinely no idea where to start. Doesn't look that difficult :?

Might have to be an outright "no can do" but thought I would try first!

HF newb

Hi,

I've never hand finished a frame in my life. Now, for various reasons, I'm trying to replicate a hand finished frame by someone else.

Any ideas where to start?

Any help would be appreciated...

Re: Deceased client...

I always find it funny (and I'm guilty of it too) how in various professions we complain about amateurs making a mess of jobs and how people should go to them rather than trying to do it themselves, but when it comes to designing websites or business cards we'd rather do it ourselves. :D think it's ...

Curious why you think it's VERY misguided. Not been my experience in other fields.

I disagree with you on the rest of the post too, but no point arguing unless anyone has some figures to back up their thoughts - I don't.

Re: Wastage continued & RMFs

Couple of thoughts... I'm not convinced that Glimpse's understanding of the situation is completely accurate - there are more factors to take in to account. As prospero says, people will come in when they've made a mess of it. They'll also have a better idea of what's possible even if it's outside o...

Re: Wastage continued & RMFs

I've always wondered about doing some kind of course like that for people who were interested (not for free).

Can't imagine it would be worth the hassle though.
