Re: Hand Finising Course Thursday 30th March

Well who’d have thought that hand-finishing could be fun! I must admit, I didn’t expect it to be so, but I went on Gesso&Bole's course the other day and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We covered a lot of ground, with Jeremy demonstrating various techniques in the morning and then me having a go in...

Re: Broadband/phone providers

I mean the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which is superseding analogue phones between now and 2025, and which I think is different from what you've mentioned.

Re: Broadband/phone providers

Thanks for the replies. Until recently I'd had good service from my current provider but I'm having a few problems with their service at the moment. I've been with them for many years so I don't know if I'm missing something better. Is anyone on the new digital service? Only one lot of my friends ar...

Broadband/phone providers

I'm thinking of changing my broadband/phone provider. Does anyone have any recommendations, or "avoid like the plague" suggestions?

Re: Flattening prints

If I don't want to leave it flattening under weights for days, I sometimes reverse-roll prints. I use the largest diameter tube I can find to reverse-roll around - very slowly and carefully - and I only do it if the print is on reasonably thin paper. If the paper is too thick, there's the risk of it...

Re: Newbie says hi

Hi Zac, welcome :) Good luck in your new career, and I'm sure you'll find this forum helpful. I've been on 3 picture framing courses at West Dean, all with John Hill who is an excellent tutor. Even on my third course, I still learnt loads! @John - I've also been on Gaynor Goffe's course, but it was ...

Framing silks

I've been asked to frame 2 silks, both with an image area of around 30x25cm. Six of the sides have a generous edge, but the edges of the other two sides are only a couple of centimetres wide, if that. They are extremely thin and delicate, they float in the air. I'm thinking of either... - Doing the ...

Re: What do you listen to when working?

My current favourite is a group called Curawaka.
I'd never heard of them so I listened to one of their songs on Youtube. I don't think I've heard South American music since The Flight of the Condor on television several decades ago! I really enjoyed it, how did you come across them?

Acrylic expansion

I normally use glass, not much acrylic at all, and I usually tape up a "sandwich" of glass/mount/art/undermount. If I do use acrylic, should I not tape up a sandwich, in case the tape stops the acrylic expanding if it wants to?

Re: New framer, struggling with pricing.

Similarly, with mouldings, if you need to lengths of moulding, but will be left with 3/4 if a length, how do you know when it will be needed for another job. I have mouldings i bought years ago still sitting around and i bet most framers will too. Yep, and what's more, you might think that you can ...

Odourless white spirit

I need to source an odour-free white spirit that’s suitable to use when painting in oils or acrylic. The only odour-free white spirit I can find is Bartoline's Clean Spirit, but the label says “Not recommended for the thinning of oil based paints”. It also says “White spirit should be used for this ...

Re: Framing for critique

Don't worry Rainbow. It was just a light hearted criticism made to a framer who knows me quite well. Ah, I see, thanks :) So it sounds as if you don't like the blue frame, and thinking again about what constitutes "good taste" (as per the "Four Levels" thread), I'm wondering wha...
