It all depends on the strength of the outer border moulding.
With a normal wood moulding in the 35-40 mm width or less, you might need an internal "skeleton" sub frame. In NA we call them "strainers".

You have not mention how you want to store your tools and supplies beside your work bench. A good rolling tool chest would be a good investment such as used by mechanics. That also keeps your bench work area free of clutter.

Many furniture store mirrors in that size range are backed with a rigid sheet of MDF or plywood that is either screwed or stapled into the back of the frame moulding. The mirror is fastened into the rebate with normal picture framing hardware.
