Re: Drymounting oil pastels
My first thought is a big NO for all of the above comments. The number one directive is to do no harm and to not experiment on a clients work of art. On the other hand, if you accept the challenge and it goes wrong, who is a fault and who is going to pay for the waisted materials the customers art t...

It is used by candle makers to harden the candles. You can also add carnauba wax which is harder and has a higher melting temperature.

Re: Swept Frames.
Can you post a picture or profile of the design you are looking for? Do you want length moulding or ready-made frames? If it is what I think you want, swept back moulding designs, they are mostly out of style these days, thus the scarcity. Attached is a profile chart that you can more explain what s...

Re: Nitric Acid?
There are many tools available to a gilder in aging the surface of a gilded object. Nitric Acid can be very dangerous and uncontrollable in a setting like this. These tools can be either mechanical or applications of other products (waxes, varnishes, paints, glazes, and powders). Object conservators...

Justintime, The hangers can be attached to the internal frame(wood strainer), close to the outer frame, if there is secure attachment to the two.

Re: working with thin mouldings
I agree with VintageFramer in that a sub-frame (internal strainer in North America) is the best solution. The wood sub-frame doesn't have to be made from super thick timber. It can be as little as 12-13mm thick. It is also easier to toe-nail it into the 8mm thick main frame than a sheet of MDF. A be...

Re: first floating/box frame
Are you referring to a deep cavity display frame? Here in the States we call them shadowbox frames. If so, the basics are the same as any other framer other than the internal depth. There are a myriad of mounting methods to learn depending on the contents. It is a specialty of some framers. There is...

Re: Cassese Underpinner Parts
If everything else fails, the hammers (plunger at the end of a pneumatic cylinder) that push the nail into the wood can probably be made from a length of standard "key stock" from a machinery tool company such as this example below: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/machine-keys/machine-ke...

Re: Framers triangle points!
Those are long obsolete "glazers points". I agree that you should be updating your supplies. The Fletcher Terry part number is 08-511 if they are still available. They are loose packed and do not fit into a fitting tool; thus, they are not as safe to use.

I agree that the machine needs to be calibrated as well as using a fresh blade.

Re: advise for a newbie
If you are referring to a 50 mm border (negative space) between the flag and the frame I would suggest it be wider. The reason is 2 fold. First that is a good size flag and the ratio of the flag (art) to the border is visually small not giving the art enough negative space. I. E. it will look crampe...

I have an old 11" x 17" scanner. That's approx. A3 size. They do exist , but more costly. I also have 24 meg camera with a good lens. This another solution if you know how to set up a copy stand. or this for A-2 sizes amazon.com/VIISAN-S21-Auto-Flatten-Technologies-Multi-Language/dp/B0BB5Y...

Welcome Stina, I am a semi-retired framer who also was burned out from the corporate life. In my case it was accounting and data processing. I do have an engineering background; however not as a career. I am also proficient in CADCAM and have a metal and woodworking shop. The logic of a good enginee...

In a 2-d image it is hard to decipher. Is there picture frame moulding printed onto the canvas.
IMHO, how cheap do you want it to look is all I have to say to the hotel.

Re: Framing prints for an exhibition that are different sizes. What would look best?
As an observation over many years it is in the eye of the viewer who is looking at the art. It depends on who you want to please. Generally they look at each framed picture (s) one at a time and not as a group. So if you are aiming to have a display most pleasing to the spectator vs the gallery owne...

Re: Framing vinyl records and record sleeves
Please, no commercial adhesive tapes. My "magic wand" method to attach the album cover is to fold a 2 ply mat in half, that fits into the cover and glue that folded over board to the backing mount board. The cover then can then slid over the unattached "flap" of the board. The re...
