Who holds the power?
Hi Everyone. As if running your own business doesn't keep you busy enough, I've gone and got myself accepted onto a PhD programme of study where I'm investigating the factors affecting the framing trade. :sweating: Here's where I need your help. Of all of the stakeholders in the framing trade (and n...

Re: Is there any point in creating a website, if I don't want to spend much time on SEO
I created my website using Go Daddy as it was a very simple and quick method to get one designed and up and running. I don't use it for selling work, but its invaluable in directing people to me as I'm slightly off the beaten track. I also made use of Google maps and Facebook. So yes, do it.

Re: Advice on framing an Indian wall hanging
Thanks Steve, that's exactly how I'd priced the job up with the spacer and deep rebate. And yes, they did say they'd paid very little for it but are happy to shell out £300 for it!!

Advice on framing an Indian wall hanging
I've been asked to frame a wall hanging that a customer has brought back from India. It's not expensive but they would like to be able to see the edging as well. It measures approx 145cm x 66cm but the edges are not straight so my initial idea of putting it straight into a frame won't work. I'm wond...

Re: Keencut System 4000 glass cutting
I bought my System 4000 second hand when I set up just over two years ago and have never been able to get it to cut glass. I tried replacing the cutting wheel but the whole head just seems to slide over the glass, and the board cutter won't cut straight either, so all I use it for now is cutting MDF...

Re: Starting out - stocking up
Wessex do carry a good range of mouldings and will supply any chevrons that you want. I use them for a few mouldings and all of my mountboard, mdf, etc. My moulding come from Ashworth & Thompson who are very good at supplying chevrons or Mainline who will do a BOGOF offer on new ranges but don't...

Re: Magnolia mitremaster
Ha Ha, memories of the Magnolia Group. My first job in the trade was with Robinsons which was their trade counter division and we used to sell the groups mouldings and equipment. In fact, I still use a Rapier mountcutter in the workshop now, although I think that it's coming to the end of its life n...

Morso blades
I've just fitted a pair of blades that I've had for a year but bought second hand, and have found that the front of them are not quite coming all of the way down so that a tail is being left on the cut moulding. Just wondering if this means that they've been ground too much and are now finished? My ...

Can't remember the exact amount of cover but all of my equipment and stock is covered Justin. I do work in a very low crime area so that will also affect the premium.

I'm currently with Direct Line cost me less than £300, compared to the £400+ figure that I had in the first year.

Re: To build an online gallery or not, that is the question
I've had my website since I opened and I agree that it's invaluable when people are looking for a framer in the area. Being in a tourist area, but off the beaten track, I've used the website and Facebook a lot for marketing purposes, as well as local advertising. I do show some of the work that I've...

Re: To build an online gallery or not, that is the question
Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I still haven't decided on whether to go ahead with one or not as at the moment I am really a framer with a workshop tucked away on a housing estate, so no passing trade really. The pictures on the wall are sales aids as much as anything, and I am concerned abou...

To build an online gallery or not, that is the question
I'm not a dinosaur. I use IT all of the time and used to teach it. I play computer games in my spare time and always have done since my first computer way back in the 80's. But, I'm wondering about the viability of adding an online shop to my website. People are obviously buying art out there somewh...
Re: Jigsaw
Just had a chat with Steve at Wessex and sure enough he's recommended the ESA1 self adhesive board
Re: Jigsaw
Thanks Justintime, I hadn't even thought about self adhesive boards.
Re: Jigsaw
As Cleaver said photo mount is actually what I was thinking when I said spray mount.
I don't have access to any laminating equipment which would probably have been my first choice. Not even anyone around me that I know of has one.

Jigsaw
Hi all. Just wondering what the best method is of fastening a jigsaw onto MDF. Was thinking spray mount.

Re: Rippled artwork
Looks like I'll be changing my methodology in future. Thanks for the advice - looks like I was taught the wrong way 30 years ago. Hey ho. As for the current print rippling problem, I initially thought that it was a humidity problem from the customer which has only come to light once it was mounted. ...
