Re: Mexican tapestry sort of thing!

a) cut a window mount with the aperture 10mm smaller in each direction than the fabric part of the work, and the outside size 50mm bigger than you expect the eventual glass size to be. b) using a needle and thread of appropriate colour(s), I would then sew the fabric part of the artwork to the face...

Re: Mexican tapestry sort of thing!

Always fascinating to read the various different ways framers would approach the same item. For my contribution: The fabric in the central panel looks to be quite thin, but with a good amount of embroidery work which adds weight. The strongest section is likely to be the border between the fabric an...

It is also worth asking Mainline if they had a customer who bought a lot of it, who might still hold some stock. Due to GDPR they'd have to get in touch with them direct, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

We've had contact from suppliers for similar reason over the years.

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!

Hi Justin Backing boards aren't included in the mountboard standards because they aren't mountboards. But for the framing levels, they already state the preferred board, but that alternatives are acceptable and about barrier layers. Level 1 - 3 pH neutral boards are preferred. We tend to use either ...

Re: New framer, struggling with pricing.

All of these thoughts are the sort we all had when starting up. That's why I can't recommend enough getting good advice and training from the outset. It will help avoid some of the pitfalls that new businesses fall into. I'm firmly of the belief that pricing and business advice should be an integral...

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!

Hi Dermot The Mountboard levels are widely used far beyond just Guild members. We are in the transition period for the change from the old mountboard standards, to the new ones, with full compliance due from 1st January 2024. So the numbered Levels are being used for all boards manufactured by compa...

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!

Thank you, we frame lots of things every week, but textiles are my favourite thing to work on and something I specialise in. To answer your questions. I call it Level 1 because that's what it is. The levels now mean that they can be used by their normal colloquial name in each region. What we call M...

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!

This is a sampler from 1890, stitched by a member of our customer’s family. It was still in its original Oxford frame, with its thin planking backing which had split into two pieces, original glass and so on. Customer quite understandably wanted to retain the frame but the “internals” needed an upda...

Text on paper is an option, but for many people they prefer the look of an engraved plaque. Neither is wrong or right. Just personal preference.

Re: The Ugly - Fixings and taping up the back...

We had to do a repair job recently - visiting a customer's home to re-tension a canvas bought from a large gallery up country. The canvas had relaxed considerably. We discovered no bracing bars, despite it being around 5ft square, so that strainer moulding they'd used had bowed in on each side. They...

Absolutely fascinating to see the process. Particularly love the spray gun  having watched Alec meticulously cleaning everything down after doing paint finishes - might just have to invest in a dedicated gesso one that he can leave to get crusty :D We are very lucky to have a bespoke staircase...

We’ve tried various places over the years with varying results, but switched to Mainline quite some time ago. Always superb service and on a Morso sharpening machine. Picked up and delivered back without problem and easy to book online or by phone. https://www.mainlinemouldings.com/index.php?Departm...
