Re: Backing Board

Isn't this getting a little out of proportion? All that's happened is that some pictures that are 70 years old have been copied, enhanced and framed. The originals are safely tucked away from the risk of further damage from light etc. The customer is happy, the framer has got 8 jobs instead of only ...

Re: Cross Stitch Mounting

Thanks, David, that's very helpful. Is PVA glue suitable to use on foam board?

Re: Cross Stitch Mounting

Thanks for the link, pramsey13. I've got one of these to re-mount and re-frame. Previously the cross-stitch was glued to some card and then taped to the mount. I can't do anything about the glued card but at least I don't have to tape the fabric. Instead I'm planning to drop the cross-stitch/card in...

Re: Glass cutter & Smoothing edges

I've got one of these - I've only used it occasionally but it's done the job. Probably not suitable for a lot of use though.

Re: New to framing

prospero, I agree with what you've said. It's all about using the right tools for the job and cutting your cloth accordingly. I make it clear on my web site and elsewhere that I specialise in framing smaller works, which my equipment is suited for. That doesn't make my equipment or Logan equipment &...

Re: New to framing

I'd ignore the hobby equipment that IFGL pointed you towards. If you buy sensibly then proper pro kit won't lose you (much) if you get bored with it all. Logan stuff is basically rubbish aimed at amateurs (I spent quite a bit on one of their mountcutters; wasted money). I hate to disagree :D but I ...

Re: Photorealistic Painting Anyone?

I think Leng Jun's work is extraordinary. Since this thread was posted (thanks JohnMcafee), I've kept returning to his work from time to time and looking to see if posters/prints are available. I haven't yet found any, but if anyone knows if posters/prints are available, please do let me know. I cou...

Posting a small picture

I've framed a small picture for a customer who wants to post it as a gift. She's asked me for recommendations as to the best way to protect and post it. It's approx 12" x 10". Would you put tape over the glass in case of breakage? Does it need to be in a box rather than just lots of corrug...

Re: Axcaliber MT1 mitre trimmer

I've got one and I do as Chris2103 said - slightly overcut with the mitre saw and then trim. Once you get familiar with the tolerances, it's easy to get a precise cut. When you first get it, it would pay to practise on some offcuts before you try it on some expensive moulding, until you get used to ...

Re: Handheld glass cutter

I see you're using a hard surface to cut on. Experts will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it's recommended to lay the glass on a padded surface. Even something like a piece of carpet or towelling would suffice if you don't have purpose-made padding.

Re: Handheld glass cutter

How slim was your sliver? I think (although I stand to be corrected) that if you try cutting less than about an inch from the edge, your success rate reduces with every millimetre. Having said that, I've got some really good "snippers" and I've sometimes cut quite close to the edge and got...

Re: Cutting through Blackcore mount board

The blurb about the Platinum Edge Mat Cutter says it cuts both 4 ply and 8 ply so you'd think it should cut OK if you've tried it with an 8 ply blade/setting. I'd check what ply the black core is and if it's 8 ply or under and won't cut with the 8 ply blade/setting, I'd contact Logan to seek their a...

Re: Off-the-shelf frames

Hi Glimpse, no I've just been asked to provide the mounts for the customer to fit. To be fair, the artist is already giving away their work as gifts, and I can understand why they're willing to spend maybe £20 each but not around £50-60 each. I've not had this situation before and I don't want the c...

Off-the-shelf frames

An artist customer who I've done some framing work for has asked me to cut some mounts for off-the-shelf frames - they want to give some of their paintings away as framed gifts and it's understandable that they don't want to spend hundreds of pounds having them framed so fair enough. The frames are ...
