Re: What do you use as a mounting board in your matted frame?

Undermount/barrier board of the same quality as the mount. I use offcuts/dropouts and make a separate charge for them.

Most of the time we use double mounts, undermount and then a backing board (CorriCor Mk3).

Re: 'Canvas' stretching

I would urge caution about dry mounting anything that contains PVA based paint, as the paint may melt during the dry mounting process in the hot press. Mark, I’m sure you appreciate it’s knowing your tools and how to use them. The HotPress has a temperature control and can also be used cold - so ju...

Re: 'Canvas' stretching

Customer: Can you frame this oil painting on a canvas that I bought whilst on holiday?

Me: What you have actually bought is an emulsion or acrylic on a very low thread count bedsheet. (Said with the utmost tact and diplomacy )

Re: 'Canvas' stretching

With these things I tend to advise sticking them down, if at all possible with a HotPress or Jetmounter but the method depends on the quality of the “canvas” and thickness of the paint. As a last resort I have used wet glue onto a board and plenty of weights. If these options are not available I hav...

Re: How long would computer mountcutter blades normally last?

By my calculation after cutting 30 mounts the blade will have plunged 240 times (4 for each aperture and 4 for each outside cut x 30). On my CMC I expect to change the blade after no more than 120 plunges (less if I’m cutting thicker boards). I reckon the cost of a blade is negligible when compared ...

Re: Cassese CS20 pneumatic underpinner

This underpinner is still for sale. Willing to consider offers in the region of £1000 (no VAT). This is about half the price of a new machine.

Can be seen and demonstrated in our Worcester shop.

Speak to any of the main suppliers - I have bought mountboard seconds from Lion and more recently from Centrado.

Re: Incredible Chinese paper cut art

I have quite a few different Chinese paper cuts in my plan chest waiting to be framed (a ready supply from my Chinese sister in law). A while back I framed one as a sample display piece to go in the window - it lasted about a week before it faded very significantly! I have framed them with tiny spot...

Re: lightweight fabric picture - how best to mount

Depending on the value of the art and depth of customer’s pockets I would consider: Donor strips sewn around all 4 edges to allow standard lacing (the trick here is to ensure correct weight of thread to use). In this example there is not a great deal of useable space around the image. Sew to a piece...

Re: Mount sizing

Right now, I'm leaning towards casually(!) mentioning it to the customer. Then, if their eyes glaze over, showing them an example of each. Then don’t let their eyes glaze over - take the opportunity to educate in an engaging way. Loads of my first time customers will say they didn’t know framing wa...

Re: Mount sizing

You don’t have to confuse them, take the time to explain why you recommend a particular material, technique or design. As an example, on Saturday a couple came in for some prices for 8 pieces to be framed. They had already been to another framer but I still went through my “routine” all the time pro...

Re: Mount sizing

I found an interesting article discussing this very subject. https://epxx.co/artigos/centre.html I’m considering producing a picture similar to one at the end of the article that shows the effect of bottom weighting to help explain it to my customers. I don’t force bottom weighting when designing bu...

Re: Supplies advice please

When I set up framing from home I used to travel to Lion (about an hour away) but quickly realised it was eating too much of my time. Unless your main supplier is on your doorstep it’s so much easier to have the stuff delivered. Wessex and Centrado have weekly van deliveries, the other main supplier...
