Re: STRUGGLING WITH MY UNDERPINNER (instruction please)
I've never heard of this breed of underpinner either, so a photo as Prospero suggests would certainly help. It could, of course be your chopping on the Morso that is out (rebate supports set too high?) and nothing to do with the underpinner . . . . . .

Re: Transporting a Morso
2 reasonably strong men can easily move a morso, but borrow a sack trolley if you can, as this will make things easier. Remove the side arms, and secure the pedal in the down position to keep the blades out of the way. Make sure anyone helping is aware of where the blades are, and that they are extr...

Re: Made First Frame Today
Well-done on your first frame! Just a thought on your KeenCut - it might well be perfectly calibrated already. You can check by taking a perfectly square piece of mountboard - say 30cm x 30cm. Check it is true by measuring the two diagonals and making sure they are the same. Now measure and draw in ...

They Should be Ashamed!
I have just had a few days off, and been touring in the Cotswolds. As you do, I have dragged my wife around every single framers and gallery that I found. We went to Cirencester, Broadway, Moreton-on-Marsh and Stratford-upon-Avon In 4 separate premises (no names no pack drill) I saw framed pictures ...

Re: Advertising slogans
Hi Michaela Good luck with your new venture. my serious answer to your question, would be to think in terms of what your business will be offering, rather than trying to think up a clever slogan. In other words what would be the benefits for the customer of using your service? For example, write up ...

Re: Average age of a picture framer????
I was 23 when I started as a picture framer . . . . . . . but that was a little while ago.
I also get frustrated at the fusty image, and old - fashioned thinking of many framers, but would respectfully point out that this is not necessarily anything to do with age!

Re: Best Frames for a Novice to Work With
See if you can buy up a mixture of mouldings from someone closing down or retireing - I've seen a few ads on ebay. Infact, I think you are in Lancashire, I have the phone number of someone who had 650 ft of assorted moulding for sale (as well as a Morso and an Euro Underpinner) - he is based in Lanc...

Re: Guillotine damaging mouldings
How many chops are you taking? The final one should be just a shaving, and as gentle as possible Or it could be poor quality moulding . . . . . . Or try putting a pice of MDF or similar between the moulding and the fence, sometimes that can help (but remember to adjust measurements) Or your machine ...

Re: Mitrecraft Lincoln
I Have spoken to Karl at Tawnycraft, and he has told me he will deliver to Derby, and that they are taking on most of the areas previously covered by Mitrecraft. Most of their range is, I think, the same, so give him a call

PRICING FOR PICTURE FRAMERS This is one of those never-ending questions . . . . . I hope that my explanation of how I work out prices might help you price your frame hamishfour, but it may also provoke some responses from colleagues who have different opinions, and perhaps know better . . . . . Sorr...

Re: Arqadia
Generally a manufacturer, whether they have entered into an exclusivity deal or not with a large wholesaler like Simons or Aqadia would not be interested in compromising that relationship for the sake of selling a few thousand feet of moulding to an end user. I think you would also find that there w...

Re: Advice please - just starting out :-)
Hi Fraggle, and welcome. Its exciting isn't it! By the sounds of it you are starting off with a much bigger workshop, and better equipment than most, so I'm sure you will be fine. A few points that I would pick up from your post though . . . . Mountboard storage is much better vertical - less damage...

Re: What has changed in the last 11 years?
Wow! Thanks very much for those replies everybody. That gives me quite a few areas to research a bit more. I was particularly interested in Kev's comment about the consolidation of suppliers, as I used to have a nightmare trying to keep carriage free order values for half a dozen suppliers. I was th...

What has changed in the last 11 years?
Hello Everyone. Let me introduce myself . . . . . I am Jim Anderson, and I started as a picture framer in 1986, after a short spell as Commercial Manager at Framers Equipment in Rochford. I ran Abbey Framing in Waltham Abbey, and Walls of Frame in Bishops Stortford, and then set up Walls of Frame in...
